TAMPA, Fla. - The Lynn University Fighting Knights made history Wednesday night, setting a new program record for most three-pointers in a single season with 189, despite falling 70-63 to the University of Tampa Spartans in Sunshine State Conference action.
The record-breaking night was highlighted by Hannah Wentworth, who knocked down six of Lynn's triples in the contest. The Fighting Knights now stand at 14-11 overall and 8-9 in SSC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
-Â Tampa used an early run in the paint to jump out to a 25-10 lead after one quarter
- Wentworth opened the scoring for Lynn in the second quarter with a shot from beyond the arc, assisted by Angelina Deleon
- Deleon pushed the tempo in transition, converting a fast-break layup and later knocking down two key free throws to trim the deficit
- Dianka Hardisson made her presence felt defensively with a block and multiple steals that led to transition opportunities
- Wentworth caught fire in the second quarter, drilling four three-pointers in the period as Lynn shot 6-of-9 from long range
- A steal from Hardisson inspired a Blue and White breakaway as she found Wentworth in the paint for made layup to be just two points off the tie, 39-37
- Deleon opened the third quarter with a game-tying layup, 39-39
- Emily Jean-Glaude was subbed in the next Lynn possession and immediately finished a layup to take the lead for the first time in the game, 41-40
- Tampa went on a seven-point run to retake the lead, 47-41
- Wentworth powered through contact for an and-one in the paint and converted the free throw to cut the deficit to three with six minutes to play in the third, 47-44
- Two made shots from Serena Baker kept the difference to three, 50-47 for the Spartans
- Lynn closed the quarter out with a made three from Wentworth and a jumper from Jean-Glaude, trailing just two points, 54-52
- Trinity Mocadlo made a layup off a rebound by Hardisson to with two minutes left in the four with Lynn trialing by six points, 63-57
- A good layup by Baker and a made tipin by Katie Tiffan were made in the final moments of the game b but wasn't enough to complete the comeback as the Spartans secured the 70-63 decision
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- Wentworth led all scorers with 23 points, hitting six three-pointers and pushing Lynn's team single-season total to a program-record 189 made threes
- Wentworth now has 69 three-pointers this season, placing her No. 3 in the program for single-season three-pointers made (closing in on Kira Harvey's 71 in 2012-13)
-Â Mocadlo added 14 points with four triples and continues to lead the team in scoring at 15.9 points per game this season
-Â Baker scored 10 points off the bench and went 8-of-11 from the free throw line, helping Lynn finish with 13 made free throws on the night
-Â Deleon recorded six points, four assists and three rebounds
- Hardisson dished out a team-high five assists while adding five rebounds and two steals
-Â Jean-Glaude contributed five points and five rebounds and is averaging 5.0 rebounds per game this year
- Lynn finished the game with 30 rebounds and 13 assists
- The Fighting Knights have now made 7.6 three-pointers per game this season, outpacing opponents from beyond the arc in overall production (5.9)
