Fighting Knights walk off Eckerd in extras for first SSC win of the season

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Lynn University softball team delivered a dramatic extra-inning victory on Friday afternoon, as the Fighting Knights walked off Eckerd, 8-7, in the bottom of the ninth inning at the Lynn Softball Field. The win marks Lynn's first Sunshine State Conference victory of the season and the eighth overall for the Blue and White, while also handing the Tritons their first league loss and snapping Eckerd's 13-game winning streak.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-Despite allowing the leadoff runner on, the Fighting Knight defense was able to muster a quick three outs to keep the game scoreless in the opening frame
- Onnalee Floriano delivered a base knock up the middle to give Lynn its first hit of the afternoon early
- Marina Goins later cashed in for the Blue and White in the first, dropping a single into center field to score two and put Lynn up early, 2-0
- The Fighting Knights would go on to add two more runs in the first on a RBI chopper from Kaela Santiago and later a Triton throwing error, 4-0
- Lynn got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second as pitcher Gabriella Lindsey delivered a clutch strikeout to escape the inning with no damage done
- Savannah Ellis added on for the Fighting Knights in the second, driving a single up the middle to score both Kyleigh Hope and Teagan Riley, 6-0
- The Tritons struck back in the fourth adding three runs to cut Lynn's lead in half, 6-3
- Lynn got out of another timely bases-loaded jam in the sixth using a fly out to deep center to escape the gram unscathed
- Floriano delivered another blow in the bottom of the sixth with a double that banged off the fence to score another run, putting Lynn up by four heading into the seventh inning
- The Fighting Knights surrendered four runs in the top of the seventh on a flurry of base hits as the Tritons tied it up 7-7
- With the contest tied 7-7, the game moved into extra innings where in the bottom of the ninth Riley reached on a throwing error and advanced to second before Quinn Lockhart entered as a pinch runner
- Ellis then reached on a bunt fielder's choice and stole second to put two runners in scoring position for the Fighting Knights
- Moments later, Lockhart raced home from third on a wild pitch, allowing Lynn to walk it off with an 8-7 extra-inning victory
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- Lynn secured an 8–7 extra-inning victory over Eckerd, handing the Tritons their first Sunshine State Conference loss of the season and snapping their 13-game winning streak
- The Fighting Knights scored eight runs on eight hits, jumping out to a 6–0 lead before ultimately walking it off in the ninth inning
- Ellis paced the offense with two RBI, including a two-run single in the second inning that extended Lynn's early lead
- Goins delivered a key swing in the first inning, driving in two runs on a single to center as part of Lynn's four-run opening frame
- Floriano finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a double, driving home a run in the sixth inning to push the Fighting Knights ahead
- Hope added a double and a run scored, while Kaela Santiago contributed an RBI single and stole a base
- In the circle, Kayley Zazzali earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit while keeping Eckerd off the board in extras
- Lindsey started the contest and logged seven innings with one strikeout, helping Lynn weather Eckerd's late push
 
UP NEXT:
The Fighting Knights are set to close out the series with the Tritons in a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch set for noon.
