WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Lynn University baseball team was unable to capitalize on its limited scoring chances on Friday afternoon, falling to Rollins, 5-0, in the Sunshine State Conference series opener. Despite a strong start on the mound from
Andrew Ravelo and a bases-loaded opportunity midway through the game, the Fighting Knights were held to just two hits as the Tars used timely hitting and late insurance runs to secure the victory.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both sides went quietly in the first inning, as
Andrew Ravelo worked a clean frame and Lynn was retired in order to keep things scoreless early
- Rollins broke through in the second, using a two-out single and a Lynn error to plate an unearned run and take a 1-0 lead
- The Fighting Knights continued to struggle offensively through the third and fourth innings, as Rollins' starter set down the first 12 Lynn hitters without allowing a hit
- Ravelo settled in on the mound, delivering multiple clean innings and working around scattered baserunners to keep Lynn within striking distance
- Lynn's best opportunity came in the fifth, as
Jason Lashley and
Cole Beck recorded singles and
Amaris Harrison drew a walk to load the bases
- The threat was cut short at the plate, as Rollins recorded an out on a fielder's choice, followed by a flyout to strand three runners and keep the deficit at 1-0
- Rollins threatened in the bottom half of the fifth with a double and a walk, but Ravelo escaped the jam to hold the Tars scoreless
- In the sixth, Rollins added to its lead, capitalizing on a hit-by-pitch and a single before a sacrifice fly pushed the advantage to 2-0
- In the seventh,
Joel Tapia-Melo drew a walk to give Lynn a baserunner, but the Fighting Knights were unable to capitalize and left him stranded
- Rollins responded in the bottom half with a solo home run to extend the lead to 3-0, later adding traffic on the bases before Lynn recorded the final outs to limit further damage
- In the bottom half of the eighth, the Tars added insurance runs, using a pair of singles and timely hitting to plate two runs and extend the lead to 5-0
- In the ninth,
Charlie Devito reached on a pinch-hit walk to provide a spark, but a double play quickly ended the threat as Rollins took game one, 5-0
