BOCA RATON, Fla. – Four innings of no-hit ball by starter Jason Beaumont and 12 hits by the offense carried Lynn University's baseball team to a 5-1 victory over Winona State on Saturday afternoon. Richie McVey went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in while Beaumont struck out seven to improve the Fighting Knights record to 9-7 overall.
Beaumont was nasty early on, striking out five batters through the first three innings without issuing a walk. He carried a no-hitter into the fifth until Cody Strang got Winona's first base knock with a single. The junior right-hander finished with four hits allowed and one earned run over six innings in earning his third win on the mound.
Warriors' starter Tony Mueller was also impressive in the early-goings until the Blue & White jumped on him for two runs in the third. Mike Diorio started the two-out scoring binge with the first hit of the game, a single into right field. An Anthony Boza single gave LU two runners on and McVey put the Knights on top 1-0 with a single up the middle. Mueller then walked the bases loaded and Eric Herrera made him pay with another RBI single up the gut of the infield.
Winona State (3-1) used its own two-out rally to get on the scoreboard in the sixth as Joe Kley brought home Jamie Soyke with a run scoring single to center field. Great defensive play by McVey in left field kept the game at 2-1, however, as Ben Sebesta singled through the left side with runners on first and second. Collecting the ball on the hop, McVey's throw to the plate was on target, gunning down Kley for the third out.
Lynn answered back in the home half of the frame when it took advantage of a WSU mistake. Austin Smith reached on a fielding error at second base and came around to score three batters later when McVey belted in his second RBI of the game with a single through the right side of the infield.
The Blue & White tacked on two more insurance runs in the seventh, getting to relief pitcher Aaron Hoverson in his only inning of work. Phil Mannelly drove home Dane Derstine with an RBI single to left field and Smith made it 5-1 with a soft infield single to short to score Mannelly.
Jason Whelan picked up his third save of the season with three scoreless innings of relief. Whelan struck out two and allowed two hits.
