BOCA RATON, Fla.—Lynn University's softball team fell in both game of a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader versus the Florida Southern College Mocs on Saturday in a 5-0 decision in game one and then a 5-1 loss in game two.
Four players for Lynn (1-31, 0-7 SSC) posted two hits on the day as Missy Montgomery, Marianne Johnson, Bianca Savulak and Christina Carvatta all collected a pair of hits.
In game one, Montgomery went the distance for Lynn in the circle and gave up 10 hits allowing four earned runs and tied a career-high four strikeouts.
Florida Southern started its scoring in the second inning after plating a leadoff double. In the next three frames, Montgomery only allowed two hits and collected three scoreless innings.
In the top of the fourth, the Fighting Knights looked to tie things up after Savulak started the inning with a leadoff triple down the left field line. Lauren Garceau then lifted a ball to shallow right field. The Mocs right fielder made the catch and then a strong throw to the plate to retire Savulak trying to tag up and score on the play.
After a scoreless fifth, the Mocs then rattled off four runs in the top half of the sixth to put the game out of reach for the Blue & White.
In addition to Savulak's triple, Montgomery and Johnson both added hits in the game.
Florida Southern scored early once again in game two of the doubleheader as Kasey Murray started for Lynn and walked the first batter of the game then gave up an infield single.
Murray retired the next three batters in order but one run scored for the Mocs in the first inning to give Florida Southern the early 1-0 advantage.
The Mocs added a run in the fourth on a two-out walk, a stolen base and two wild pitches.
Lynn tallied its first run of the series in the bottom of the fourth when Kaci Vassallo earned a leadoff walk then moved to third on a Florida Southern error by the first baseman.
With one out and runners on second and third, Montgomery lifted a looping fly ball into left center field to score Vassallo and earn her first career RBI as a Fighting Knight.
The Knights could not plate anymore runs as the tying run was left on third base for Lynn in the fourth.
In inning number five, FSC tallied two runs off no hits with the help of two Lynn throwing errors. The Mocs then added another run in the seventh to conclude the scoring and total a 5-1 Fighting Knights loss.
Murray allowed only three hits but five runs, four walks and four wild pitches. The sophomore added a season-high five strikeouts in her first complete game of the year.
