BOCA RATON, Fla.—Despite falling behind 2-1 after doubles, Lynn University's No. 4 men's tennis team won four-straight singles matches to pull a 5-2 win over the NAIA No. 2 Embry-Riddle Eagles on Sunday's April Fool's Day match.
With an impressive win for Lynn (14-1), No. 3 Willi Wolfer and Vlad Cirla dropped the NAIA's top doubles team of Patrick Besch and Adrian Bayh 8-4 at the top doubles flight.
At number three doubles, the Italian combo of Luca Pavanelli and Alessio Iannozzi fell for the first time this season in an 8-6 loss to the Eagles' No. 22 team of Simon Felix and Peter Francis.
With the match tied at 8-8, George Laffey and Max Kouyate fell in the tie breaker 7-3 to the No. 10 tandem of J.R. Leonik and Chris Freeman at number two doubles.
Iannozzi responded from his doubles loss and tied the overall match at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at number five singles shortly followed by a No. 18 Cirla win in the second singles flight 6-1, 6-3 over No. 12 Besch.
The top singles flight featured No. 8 Wolfer versus the NAIA's top-ranked Chris Freeman. Wolfer tallied a tiebreak win 7-6 (7-5) in the first set then rolled to a 6-1 victory in set number two to give the Knights a 4-2 advantage.
In number three singles, No. 36 Pavanelli captured the overall match for Lynn in come-from-behind fashion. Pavanelli fell in set one 6-4 then amassed a pair of 6-4 wins in set two and three to claim his individual match and the overall match.
Kouyate lost in set one 6-7 (7-3) then fell behind 2-5 in the second set before the match was completed. At number six singles, Amaury Van Haelen tallied a 2-1 advantage over David Sepennare before the match was called.
