Box Score Saint Leo, Fla. – Having been held without a goal for 240-plus minutes against Rollins this year, Lynn University's men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to keep its season alive with a 2-1 victory over the second-seeded Tars in the semifinals of the Sunshine State Conference Championship. Jake Furman came off the bench to notch a goal and the game-winning assist while Kevin Shields logged six massive saves.
The Fighting Knights (11-5-1) relied heavily on their defense in the opening half as nationally-ranked No. 3 Rollins (16-2-0) put some early pressure on the midfield. An unfortunate turnover in LU's third gave the Tars their first scoring opportunity but Shields turned away the shot within the 18-yard box to keep the match scoreless.
Lynn clawed for chances in the second half and finally had a break in the 59th minute of play when Chris Hellmann beat his defender for a one-on-one with keeper Keneil Baker. The left-footed Hellmann juked to his right and Baker slide and took out the feet of the Fighting Knights Second Team All-SSC selection forcing a penalty kick. Furman stood over the ball and immediately beat Baker off the whistle to give Lynn a 1-0 lead.
Rollins appeared taken aback by the deficit and the Blue & White pounced on the lapse of intensity. Lynn was able to fire off two more attempts, forcing Baker into a pair of saves. One save came off a Furman diving header off the left post to set up the game-winning corner kick.
With Furman at the left flag, the midfielder sent in a cross to the middle of the six-yard box. Michael O'Neill stood alone in front of Baker and put away the in-air shot with four white jerseys looking on to make it a 2-0 Lynn lead.
Rollins kept things interesting, though, taking advantage of a defensive miscue. Philipp Schadd ran past the defense on a miscommunicated play and chipped a shot over Shields to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 10 minutes to play.
That would be the only mistake by Lynn's freshman keeper as he stopped a pair of point-blank shots within eight minutes of the final whistle. The Blue & White then maintained possession, forcing Rollins into a game of keep-away.
Rollins outshot Lynn 15-7 but LU was even 7-7 in corner kicks, with five coming in the second period. Shields had six saves and his defense logged two stops as well. The Tars had previously beaten LU 2-0 in an early-season match-up and again 1-0 in the last week of October.
The Fighting Knights will now play for their 11th SSC crown on Sunday at 1 p.m. against the winner of top-seeded Saint Leo and fourth-seeded Barry. Fans can watch the game live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter, Instagram and Vine.
