BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's fourth-ranked men's tennis team lost to No. 3 West Florida (11-0) on Monday afternoon at the Perper Tennis Complex. The Fighting Knights lose their first match of the season and stand at 10-1 overall.
Lynn took a 2-1 lead in doubles with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. UWF's Bruno Savi and Tony Rajaobelina defeated Lynn's top doubles team of Daniel Riggs and Paolo Volpicelli, 8-4, for a 1-0 Argonaut lead. Vlad Cirla and Roman Turtygin beat No. 10 Domenico Sano and Alex Peyrot, 8-5, to even the match at 1-all. The Blue & White's No. 3 doubles team of Alessio Iannozzi and Tomas Porkop won, 8-5, over Felipe Frattini anad Elio Latella for the Fighting Knights to take the slight advantage heading into singles.
The Argo's No. 3 singles player Rajaobelina defeated Porkop in sets of 6-0, 6-1, to knot the match at 2-2. Lynn answered back with a win at the No. 6 spot when Roman Turtygin beat Latella 6-2, 6-2. Peyrot defeated Riggs 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot before No. 1 Savi took down No. 17 Cirla 7-5, 6-3, at the top singles spot. Iannozzi took the first set, 6-2, at the No. 4 singles spot but UWF's No. 16 Kenny Brasil forced a third set when he won, 6-4, in set two. Brasil went on to win the third set, 6-3, clinching the Argo's 11th win of the season. Volpicelli lost the first set to No. 26 Frattini before the Argo's No. 5 man retired to finalize the match, 5-4, in favor of West Florida.
Lynn returns to the courts on Wednesday, March 12, when they host Auburn Montgomery who ranks second in the NAIA polls. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Perper Tennis Complex.
