Savannah, Ga.- The fourth-ranked Lynn University men's tennis team lost a close 5-4 battle with No. 9 Columbus State on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Knights drop their second match in a row and stand at 11-3 overall while CCSU advances to 10-2. Tomas Porkop had another stellar performance in singles today, winning in three sets over Marco Almorin.
The Fighting Knights trailed 2-1 after doubles play. Columbus State's top duo, who ranks ninth national, defeated Daniel Riggs and Paolo Volpicelli, 9-7, while Lynn's No. 3 doubles team of Pavel Mojha and Roman Turtygin lost, 8-4. Porkop teamed with Alessio Iannozzi for Lynn's only win in doubles at the No. 2 spot. The duo defeated Michael Trebuhov and Derrick Taylor, 8-4, for their eighth victory of the season.
With No. 17 Vlad Cirla missing his second match this season, Porkop played No. 1 singles for Lynn for the second consecutive match and had some big shoes to fill. After losing the opening set, 4-6, he came from behind to take the next two sets, 7-6, 6-2, for the victory. CCSU took No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles to seal the win. Iannozzi beat Trebuhov, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 singles while No. 36 Mojha defeated Derrick Taylor in two sets of 6-1 at the bottom of the Fighting Knights' lineup.
Lynn returns home to the Perper Tennis Complex on Wednesday, March 19 for a non-conference match against No. 46 New York Tech.
