Box Score 2 BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's bats heated up at the right time on a cold day to help the softball team earn a split with Webber International in their home opener on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Knights dropped the first game 7-5 before winning in dramatic fashion, 4-2, on a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 7th by Cherise McEnery.
Counting the final two innings of the first game of the doubleheader, the Blue & White offense was able to tally runs in four consecutive innings. It was McEnery who led Lynn's offensive comeback in game two with a RBI single after Sara Vazquez led things off in the frame. Vazquez singled, stole second and moved to third on three straight pitches before McEnery's RBI base knock.
A 1-0 advantage was short lived after Webber (7-6) knotted the game in the top of the second. Vazquez, though, put the Fighting Knights back on top with a ground ball to third, allowing Amanda Casillas, who opened the frame with a single, to reach home plate.
Again Webber International tied the game, 2-2, in the fifth as Missy Montgomery and Naomi Spurgeon were locked in a pitcher's duel. Montgomery allowed six hits and two runs in the complete game but walked five and fanned two batters.
Kaci Vassallo jumped all over a Spurgeon inside fastball to start the seventh, turning on the pitch inside the first base bag, bringing McEnery to the plate. Spurgeon did not issue a walk but might have wanted to as her first pitch was smashed over the right field wall for the game-winning runs.
McEnery finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. The bottom half of Lynn's order was also impressive as Francais Olexa and Christina Carvatta combined to go 5-for-6.
Errors proved too costly for the Fighting Knights in the opening game as three gaffes led to six unearned runs for Webber. Olexa was hitting her marks early, striking out the final batter in each of the first three frames with Warriors in scoring position.
An infield error in the fourth helped Webber take a 1-0 led while an error in the outfield led to a run and extended the inning one more batter where Jennifer Hamil belted a two-run home run.
Lynn's bats found its rythym in the sixth with three runs, cutting its deficit to 5-3. Casillas, Olexa and Vazquez all notched two-out singles to give the Blue & White momentum.
Another error in the seventh proved pivotal as it led to a pair of runs crossing home plate. The Fighting Knights tried to get back in the game in the home half with Manya Lopez blasting a two-run home run over the left center fence but two more outs ended the game 7-5 in Webber's favor.
Olexa picked up the loss with 5.1 innings of work, seven hits allowed, five runs, one earned, three walks and four strikeouts. Katelyn Key was solid in relief, allowing two hits and two unearned runs with one walk and one K in 1.2 innings pitched.
The Fighting Knights return to the diamond on Friday, February 20, when they battle Lincoln Memorial in Saint Leo, Fla. Fans can keep up with the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
