No. 16 Rollins Sweeps Lynn to take SSC Series 2-1 in Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Winter Park, Fla.- Although the Lynn University softball team took the first game of the Sunshine State Conference series against 16th-ranked Rollins Friday night to beat Rollins for the first time since 2008, the Tars came back in full force on  Saturday afternoon to win both games of the double header to take the series 2-1. Rollins scored three late runs in game one to win 4-1 before shutting out the Blue & White 2-0 in game two. Lynn falls to 10-10 overall and 1-2 in SSC play while the nationally-ranked Tars improve to 17-1 and 5-1 in league action.

Rollins scored in the bottom of the third inning in game one of the double header on an RBI double by Brianne Lint to a 1-0 Rollins lead. An inning and a half later Cherise McEnery smashed a solo home run over the left field fence knotting the game 1-all in the top of the fifth.

Missy Montgomery was throwing one of her best performances of the season but ran into some trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning allowing three runs on a pair of hits. Francais Olexa came on in relief and struck out the side to end the bases-loaded threat.

A leadoff walk by Kaci Vassallo placed a runner on base for the Fighting Knights but they were unable to drive in runs in the top of the seventh, losing game one 4-1 to split the series 1-1.

Montgomery tossed five and a third innings allowing four runs on eight hits. Olexa struck out the only batter she faced in the circle and Christina Carvatta went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Fighting Knights.

In the rubber match, Rollins scored one run in both the fourth and sixth innings. It was just enough for the Tars as they Fighting Knights stranded nine runners on base in the loss. Lynn had seven hits including another 2-for-3 performance from Carvatta while Olexa went the distance in the circle allowing one run on seven hits. The Blue & White's southpaw struck out three Tars in six innings of work.

Carvatta went four-for-six over the course of the day and was the only Fighting Knight to have multiple hits in both games.

The Blue & White will travel back to the National Training Center on Tuesday, March 10, when they take on Maryville (Mo.) at 1 pm and Turman at 3 pm. Fans can follow the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com. Don't forget to 'Like' us on Facebook and follow @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
