Men's golf season preview

BOCA RATON, Fla. – With a strong core of returners, a talented newcomer, and a deep sophomore class, the Lynn University men's golf team is preparing for an exciting 2025–26 season. Head coach Steve LeBrun believes his group's work ethic and depth will give the Fighting Knights plenty of chances to compete for championships.

Four seniors headline the roster: Andres Asin (Madrid, Spain), Matthew DePinto (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Connor Owen (Newtown, Wales) and newcomer Simon Roessler (Santiago, Chile).

Asin has the potential to anchor the team once again. "Andres is the ringleader of everything," LeBrun noted. "He gets along with everyone, and whether he's playing great or struggling, you'd never know. That even keel is what makes him a leader."

DePinto has developed into a steady presence in the lineup after showing improved mental toughness last year. "Matt has tremendous talent and has learned how to level out through the good and the bad," LeBrun said. "He's become a more consistent player and teammate."

Owen is another model of consistency. "Connor's a guy I never have to worry about," LeBrun added. "He gives full effort every time he tees it up. He has so many leadership qualities as well."

Roessler, the lone newcomer this fall, arrives with international experience and a strong golf pedigree. "Simon has played in big tournaments across South America and has college experience," LeBrun said. "He's steady, he's consistent, and I think with some guidance he can take it to another level. And of course, being the brother of Toto Gana, who helped Lynn win two national championships, adds a nice connection."

Junior Sebastiano Mascia (Orlando, Fla.) has already shown flashes of elite play and is poised for a breakout season. "He's had big wins here in Florida and played great at conference last spring," LeBrun said. "He knows my expectations for him — and I know he has the talent to be in contention."

The sophomore class of Douglas Basadur (Fonthill, Ontario), Theo Desroches (Saint-Sauveur, Quebec), Joe Houghton (Scottsdale, Ariz.), and Cole Ropicky (Wales, Wis.) all gained valuable experience last season. Each showed strong qualifying rounds and flashes of success in tournaments. "Having four sophomores with a year under their belt is big," LeBrun explained. "Last year was an adjustment for them, but now they know the drill. They know how to balance school, practice, and travel. I think that confidence will translate into even better results."

The Fighting Knights will tee off in four fall tournaments before a five-event spring slate leading into postseason play. The highlight of the fall will be competing at Innisbrook's Copperhead Course, home of the PGA TOUR's Valspar Championship.

The season will also feature local events in the spring, leading into the Sunshine State Conference Championship. "Our expectation is to give ourselves a lot of chances to win," LeBrun stated. "Winning in college golf is tough, but if this group experiences it once, it will only get easier. We have the potential to win tournaments and to make a run at regionals. I'm excited to see how far this team can go."

The Fighting Knights begin the 2025-26 campaign at the Jay Jennison Cup, hosted by Flagler, starting on Monday, Sept. 29.
