Box Score 2 Tampa, Fla. – Lynn University's baseball team dropped both games of its double-header, 9-6 and 6-5, at No. 14 Tampa on Saturday. The Fighting Knights offense came alive with Dane Derstine hitting .715 (5-for-7) with two runs batted in while Eric Herrera drove in three runs. Lynn's record drops to 13-13 overall and 2-4 in Sunshine State Conference play.
After being shut out through nine frames a night earlier, LU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning of game one. Johnny Broderick drove in the first run with a ground ball to first. Kyle Radzewski added the next two runs with a bases loaded single and Austin Smith plated the Knights' final run with a sacrifice fly.
Unfortunately, Tampa (18-7, 4-2 SSC) responded with three runs in the third and three more in the fifth to grab a 6-4 lead. The Blue & White were able to keep things close by scoring in the sixth and seventh frames but the Spartans answered back following each LU rally.
Lynn once again found itself leading to start game two, putting two runs on the scoreboard in the first only to see UT knot things up in the bottom of the second. Derstine put the Blue & White ahead 3-2 in the third with a RBI single and Herrera made it 4-2 a couple batters later with a sacrifice fly.
Four runs, however, over the next three innings catapulted UT back into the driver's seat. After forcing starter Frank DeJulio from the game in the third, reliever Shane Reidie held Lynn's bats at bay for the next three frames before the Herrera walked with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 6-5 in the top of the seventh and one out.
The Knight's rally was cut down by Justin Leith, who got Tampa out of the bases loaded jam with a strikeout and pop-out to end the game.
Lynn returns to action on Friday, March 25, at 6 p.m. when it takes on Palm Beach Atlantic in Lake Worth, Fla. Fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.LynnFightingKnights.com and selecting "Game Central."
