Baseball Falls To Wilmington In 11-Inning Marathon

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's baseball team fell to Wilmington 5-1 Monday afternoon in an 11 inning marathon at the McCusker Sports Complex.  The Fighting Knights fall to 10-8 while the Wildcats improve to 6-1.

Mike Diorio had a career-high four base hits but it was not enough as the Blue & White were held scoreless after taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning.  Wes Soto and Johnny Broderick also had a pair of hits for the Knights who outhit the Wildcats 11-9.

Starting pitcher Kyle Wolfe looked impressive on the mound allowing just five hits in six innings of shutout ball.

LU took the lead in the first as Diorio and Wes Soto led off the game with a pair of singles to put runners at the corners with no outs.  Ryan Lally then threw a wild pitch which scored Diorio but that was all of the scoring for Lynn who left 14 runners on base, including two that first inning.

Wilmington tied the game in the seventh as Ryan Digiose started the inning in relief of Wolfe.  Digiose walked the first two batters and a sacrifice bunt to runners on second and third before Jordan Oncay's RBI single.  On the fly to center, Bello threw out Bryan Woolford at third as he tried to advance from second for the second out as Digiose fanned Matt Umba to retire the side.

Lynn's best chance to win before extra innings came in the eighth as it had runners on second and third but were unable to capitalize.

The Fighting Knights used three pitchers in the 11th inning as Wilmington took a 5-1 lead.  Eric Herrera started a possible rally with a leadoff double to left center and was followed by a Dane Derstine free pass and a Diorio infield single to load the bases.  However, Joe Harbach, the team's starting centerfielder who came into pitch in the tenth, was able to end the jam getting the final two Knights to fly out.

Conference play is next in line for the Fighting Knights as they will travel to saint Leo for a three-game series on March 11-12.  First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm on Friday followed by a 1 pm doubleheader on Saturday.  Fans can follow the action by logging onto www.LynnFightingKnights.com and clicking on "Game Central."
