Freshmen Lead Crusade in Women's Soccer Victory

Box Score

Winter Park, Fla. – It was freshman day on the pitch Sunday as three freshmen contributed to Lynn University's women's soccer team's 2-0 victory over Belmont Abbey.  A game after tallying two assists, Jackie Hellett recorded her first career multi-goal game while Lina Forsman and Kirstie Schults picked up assists.  Lynn improves to 2-0 overall.

It didn't take long for the Blue & White to show the Crusaders what they were in for.  Almost immediately following kick-off, freshman Lauren Handley found Schults streaking through the midfield.  The perfectly placed pass gave Schults a breakaway but Hannah Kohls made a diving stop for the first of her eight saves on the day.

A barrage of shots continued on Kohls but LU couldn't quite sneak one past.  On the defensive front, the Knights held Belmont Abbey without a shot until 29 minutes into play, a weak attempt from 30-yards out.

Lynn finally snapped the scoreless tie in the 33rd minute of play.  Getting a pass from Hellett, Forsman took on her defender on the right wing and returned the favor with a pass to Hellett towards the top of the box.  The Ponte Vedra, Fla., product drilled her shot to the left side-netting to put LU on top 1-0.

There was no second-half let-up by the Knights as Hellett continued to aggravate the Crusaders from the whistle.  It was seven minutes into the second period when Schults connected with Hellett for a corner kick goal.

Kelsey Butler posted two saves in the first half before giving way to freshman Meghan Dolan for the last 45 minutes.  Dolan stopped one shot in her first career appearance.

Rio Hanlan, Lauren Impey, Paige Meggison and Megan Rodwell kept Belmont Abbey away from the box for much of the game and allowed just four shots overall, three of which came on goal.  Lynn managed 17 shots.

Hellett almost completed the hat trick on two occasions.  Both coming late in the match, her first try came off a cross from Forsman where she was a split second behind the pass while the second attempt was as time was expiring and her breakaway was thwarted by a tipped ball.

The Fighting Knights return to action on Friday, September 9, when they face Christian Brothers in Memphis, Tenn.
