McCatty Scores 21 Points in Women's Basketball's Loss to Johnson C. Smith

BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's women's basketball team (3-4) fell to Johnson C. Smith, 63-60, in the first game of the Fighting Knights home basketball tournament on Saturday afternoon. Sharneka McCatty had a season-high 21 points to lead all scorers. Lynn will face Benedict (5-1) tomorrow at 2 pm in the final game of the Blue & White's tournament.

Lynn took a quick 5-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game but a 15-2 run by Johnson C. Smith would pull the Golden Bulls ahead by 10, 17-9, at the 14:56 mark. The Blue & White brought it within six after a pair of free throws by Shay Harris a 7:28 but JCSU would once again extend its lead, this time 15 points with 3:23 left in the half. The Fighting Knights would end the opening frame on an 8-2 run to trail 38-29 at the break.

The Blue & White shot 37 percent from the field and JCSU shot an impressive 48.6 percent. Lynn was lethal from the charity line, connecting on 8-of-9 free throws. McCatty led the Fighting Knights with 10 points while Johnson C. Smith's Anika Jones led all scorers with 15 points.

The Fighting Knights opened the half on an 8-3 run to cut the deficit to three points. At the 10:42 mark the Golden Bulls led by seven, 45-38, but Lynn would answer once again bringing the score within three by 8:21. JCSU led by as many as nine, 56-47, before the Blue & White put together an 8-0 run that was capped off by a three-pointer by Tylar Tracy to cut Johnson C. Smith's lead to one, 56-55, with 1:55 remaining in regulation. McCatty drained a last second trey but the Fighting Knights fell 63-60.

Lynn outscored JCSU 31-25 in the second half and shot 38.5 percent from the field while holding the Golden Bulls to 26.9 percent. Johnson C. Smith edged Lynn 23-16 in rebounds but the Fighting Knights were able to capitalize on 11 turnovers by JCSU in the final 20 minutes.

McCatty fell just a point shy of tying her career best in the loss. She connected on 8-of-14 shots from the field and made all of her free throws. Tracy had nine points, all off of three-pointers in the second half. Lynn shot 37.7 percent from the field and 78.9 percent from the free-throw line while also scoring 21 points off the bench.

The women's basketball team will face Benedict, who lost their first game of the season Saturday to Saint Leo, at 2 pm in the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center.
