Baseball Gets Pat-rick on the Back; Downs Columbus State

Box Score

Columbus, Ga. – Three games and three quality starts from Lynn University's starting pitchers.  The latest was a no-hit bid by Daniel Patrick as the baseball team took the series from Columbus State 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.  Patrick tossed seven innings with three K's in his most recent start for the Fighting Knights and Tom Kain closed out the series 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored to hit .462 in the series.  Lynn improves to 5-2 overall.

Columbus State (3-4) had no answer for Patrick throughout the game.  The Cougars only base runners against the senior right-hander were two hit batsmen and a walk.  Patrick ran into some trouble in the third when he hit two out of the first three batters, but he picked off the runner at second and induced an inning-ending fly ball to get out of the jam.

Assistant coach Donovan O'Dowd called a hitters meeting prior to the fourth to discuss adjustments and the conversation proved to be a sparkplug as the Blue & White went out to score two runs.  Kain smacked a single down the left field line before Sal Giardina gave the team runners on second and third with a double into the right center gap.  Mike Gonzalez followed with single to right to put Lynn on top 1-0.

Gonzalez next stole second and a bad throw from the Cougars catcher allowed Giardina to trot across home plate with ease.

The no-no last into the seventh until Blake Edwards ripped a single through the left side of the infield.  Two Fighting Knights errors allowed CSU to get on the board but Patrick got Joey Lewis to foul out and end the threat.

Lynn added an insurance run in the top of the ninth but it was not needed with Bill Mendek on the mound.  The tall right-hander took the hill in the eighth and retired the side in order.  Columbus State looked for ninth inning heroics once again but Mendek shut the door for his second save in as many days.

In addition to Kain's solid hitting, Alex DeBellis batted .636 (7-for-11) and Alex Freedman hit .400 (4-for-10).  The Fighting Knights starting pitching staff pitched 18.2 innings, allowing 12 hits and 10 strikeouts, with just two earned runs and two walks issued.

Lynn returns to the diamond on Saturday, February 15, at noon when it hosts Stillman College.  Fans can watch the game live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter, Instagram and Vine.
