Baseball Earns Its Stripes; Knocks Out Tigers in NCAA Tournament

Tampa, Fla. – Lynn University's baseball team lives to play another game after knocking out Stillman College 14-6 in the NCAA Division II South Regional on Friday afternoon.  The Fighting Knights belted 15 hits in recording a season-best for runs, RBIs (14) and total bases (25).  Thomas Kain went 4-for-6 at the plate, Mike Gonzalez smacked a pivotal three-run home run and South Region Player of the Year Sal Giardina drove in three runs.

The road was not an easy one for the Blue & White as Stillman (30-21) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening inning off a Nick Boggs RBI single and passed ball and later had a 3-1 advantage with a run in the bottom of the second.

Lynn, though, capitalized on four Tigers errors in the second and fourth innings to go ahead 4-3.  Kain drove in his first run with a double down the left field line before Giardina drilled a triple into the left center gap.  Alex DeBellis's RBI single a batter later gave Lynn its first lead of the game, although it was short lived.

Stillman continued to barrage Travis Connelly, using three hits, including a two-out, two-run single by Dustin Dunn, to take back the lead, 5-4.  Connelly recovered and stymied the Tigers over the remaining five innings, allowing one run on four hits.  The junior righty picked up his fourth complete game of the season in improving to 4-5 overall.

Lynn's bats came alive in the fifth, chasing Stillman starter Ashton Johnson from the game.  A bases loaded walk to DeBellis knotted the game at five while Ben Schwanburg drove in his second run of the game with a ground out.  Gonzalez stepped to the plate and drilled the first offering he saw from Johnson off the foul pole in right field for his second home run of the season while giving the Fighting Knights a 9-5 lead.  Lynn's scoring did not end there with Michael Stemle driving home Matt Ackerman with a one-out single.

Reliever Myles Jeanminette had some success against the Blue & White until the eighth when he met up with Giardina.  With Kain on first, Giardina blasted a 1-2 fastball over the right center field fence for his fifth home run of the year.  He has a team-high 40 RBIs.  Looking to keep the scoring going, Lefran belted a two-run single to right center field, increasing Lynn's advantage to 14-6.

The Fighting Knights will play the loser of Alabama-Huntsville/Florida Southern on Saturday at 3 p.m.  Fans can watch the game live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
