Box Score Milledgeville, Ga. – Trailing for much of the afternoon, Lynn University's women's soccer team scored twice in a six minute span in the second half, capped off by Kirstie Schults' second goal, to claim a 3-2 victory over West Georgia in the opening match of the Bobcat Shootout. Schults' multi-goal game is her first since September 15, 2012 and improved the Fighting Knights record to 2-1-0 overall.
With a 2-1 deficit at hand, the Blue & White put forth a barrage of shots against UWG (0-3-1). Linzi Martin had the best look in the 61st minute with a shot just over the crossbar but the junior midfielder was given a second chance and did not disappoint. Tatiana Penagos collected a loose ball near the top-right corner of the box and witnessed as her centered pass was struck by Martin to the top right shelf for the equalizer.
A mere six minutes later the Fighting Knights grabbed their first lead. Jordyn Turner began the winning play by beating two defenders near the left corner and splitting a third defender on a pass to Emma Portsmouth. Portsmouth settled the ball and found Schults alone on the right post. The ensuing kick was ripped past Wolves' keeper Rebecca Harb for her third on the season.
In just three games this year Schults has matched her entire 2013 goal total. She has a team-leading six points as well, two shy of her total from a year ago.
The Wolves received some help from the Blue & White on both of their goals, the first coming 6:34 into the match when Kelly Geary was dragged down inside the box to give UWG a penalty kick. Rebecca Cannon converted on the PK to give her team a 1-0 advantage.
Lauren Handley perfectly set up Schults on Lynn's first goal, sending a ball between the left and center backs. West Georgia's center back made a sliding attempt to clear the ball but Schults tipped it past her and got off a shot past a pulled out keeper to even the match 1-1.
A second miscue, three minutes after Lynn's goal, helped the Wolves take a 2-1 lead into the break. UWG lofted a ball into the box from 30-years bout but miscommunication between the back line and keeper allowed the ball to drop to Cari Powell for an open-netted score.
Lynn held a 20-12 advantage in shots but did not attempt a corner kick. Caitlin Shaver turned away four shots while her counterpart Harb made five saves.
