HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • First Quarter: Lynn's Tifani Kerrison controlled the opening tip, but the Gyrenes tallied the first four points of the game. Kerrison gave the Fighting Knights their first lead with a free-throw six minutes into the quarter and Lynn led 14-12 after the first ten minutes.
  • Second Quarter: The frame opened with a bucket each from Kerrison and Charla Nelson-James to extend the Lynn lead to 18-12. Shatorria Baker connected on a three-pointer with 3:40 remaining in the half. The Knights were able to maintain momentum for the duration of the second quarter, carrying a 30-25 advantage into the locker room at the intermission.
  • Third Quarter: The Knights posted their highest-scoring period of the night, connecting on 11-of-16 from the floor to total 22 third-quarter points. Nelson-James led the way with six points, and Lynn scored every point of the quarter inside the paint.
  • Fourth Quarter: The final stanza saw Gyrene guard Taylor Lindsey score half of her team's 12 points, but Ave Maria shot just 5-of-20 in the frame. Only three Fighting Knights recorded a bucket in the fourth quarter, but it was enough for the Blue and White to earn their first win of the year.

QUOTABLE:

  • "No matter how you get a win, it is always a good thing. Ave Maria is a heck of a basketball team and they are coached very well, so I'm happy to get out of here with a win. We want to be a team that shares the basketball, and the next step is to find a way to rebound. We needed some positive reinforcement after how hard we have been working, and I am proud of the effort our team showed tonight." – Lynn head coach Julia Huddleston
