HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Newberry's first ten hitters scored off Lynn starter Robert Guarnieri, forcing the Fighting Knights to turn to the bullpen early.
  • Lynn's offense came alive in the first inning when senior John Borup put the first pitch he saw over the left field wall. John Silviano launched a moonshot of his own in the third frame, and two innings later, Frank Grandinette and Ryan Donovan left the yard in consecutive at-bats.
  • Donovan's dinger chased Newberry starter Daniel Nations, and Tyler Curtis welcomed reliever Mike DeLee to the game with the back end of back-to-back-to-back home runs.
  • Alex Caballero gave the Blue and White six strong innings on the mound before turning the ball over to southpaw Rigo Beltran for the final three.

QUOTABLE:

  • "We saw the poise and ability to stay under control after trying to overcome that first inning. We had an opportunity to bounce back and make it a game. When we are able to combine the power we saw today with getting on base consistently, I think we can take our offense to another level. Tomorrow, we will see a solid club in Catawba, and it should be a fun day." - Lynn head coach Rudy Garbalosa

STATS FROM THE GAME:

  • DeLee earned the win for the visiting Wolves after delivering 4.2 innings of relief and allowing just two runs.
  • Guarnieri took the loss to drop to 0-1.
  • Donovan belted out three base hits, all of which went for extra bases.
  • Daymon Totherow paced Newberry with a 3-for-6 effort at the plate and four RBI, while Mike Gonzalez and Derek Olenchik combined for four hits and four RBI.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The last time Lynn lost their season opener was 2012, when they lost 3-2 on the road against Palm Beach Atlantic.
  • Friday was the first meeting between Newberry and Lynn since 2007 and just the fourth overall.

UP NEXT:

The Fighting Knights return to action on Saturday, when they host 2nd-ranked Catawba at Lynn Baseball Field. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
