Baseball Drops Rubber Match to Columbus State in Ten-Inning Slugfest

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Lynn University baseball team wrapped up their first road series of the year on Sunday, falling 19-18 to Columbus State in the rubber match of the three-game set.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Lynn hit the scoreboard first, scoring a run in the opening frame before adding two more an inning later.
  • The Cougars responded with a three-run second, only to see the Fighting Knights go back on top 5-3 in the third.
  • The fifth and sixth frames each saw the Fighting Knights plate four and the Cougars scratch across three.
  • The seventh inning saw the home nine erupt for seven runs and take a 16-13 lead.
  • Lynn posted their biggest inning of the day in the ninth, tallying five runs on four base hits.
  • Cougar leftfielder Matt Nettles launched a two-run shot in the bottom half, and after the first nine frames, the two teams were tied at 18.
  • After overcoming a John Silviano double in the top half, Columbus State started the home tenth with a base hit.
  • After a defensive blunder and intentional walk, pinch hitter Mike McClellan was hit by a pitch, giving Columbus State the walkoff victory.

STATS FROM THE GAME:

  • Jonathon Corbitt highlighted the effort for the Fighting Knights with five RBI, including four off a grand slam in the sixth inning.
  • Alex Turner went a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish, launching his second home run of the season and driving in a pair of runs.
  • John Borup added three base hits of his own as the final Fighting Knight with a multi-hit afternoon.
  • Starting pitcher Jaret Vermillion pitched into the fifth for the Blue and White, allowing five earned runs on nine base hits before turning things over to the Lynn bullpen.
  • Robert Guarnieri took the loss to drop to 0-2 on the season. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Lynn has hit at least one home run in six of their first eight games this season and has hit more than one on three occasions.
