Spartans Prove Too Much for Lynn Women's Basketball

TAMPA, Fla. – The Lynn University women's basketball team stumbled on Wednesday night, falling 64-44 to the University of Tampa in Sunshine State Conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • First Quarter: The Spartans controlled the opening tip, but a Shatorria Baker runner put the Fighting Knights on the scoreboard first. Tampa then went on a 9-0 run, but Lynn scored the next seven and pulled even when Brekia Henderson knocked down the team's first three of the game. Tampa's Taylor McVey recorded six points in the frame to lift the home team to a 13-9 lead at quarter's end.
  • Second Quarter: The Spartans were in an offensive rhythm the entire second quarter, moving in front by as many as 18 three different times. Charla Nelson-James scored all of Lynn's points, and Tampa carried a 33-15 advantage into the locker room at intermission.
  • Third Quarter: Tifani Kerrison scored the first eight Lynn points of the second half, sinking a contested a layup and pulling the trigger on a pair of three-balls. Tampa never let up, however, and cruised into the fourth quarter with a comfortable 55-29 lead.
  • Fourth Quarter: Lynn posted their highest-scoring stanza of the night in the fourth, highlighted by four from both Nelson-James and Bria Huffman. The Fighting Knights held the Spartans to just nine points, but Tampa came away with a 64-44 victory.

STATS FROM THE GAME:

  • Nelson-James led all scorers with 16 points, while McVey and Juliana Cavallaro totaled 27 for the Spartans.
  • McVey collected a game-best 11 rebounds to round out the double-double, and Nelson-James' six boards held up as a team-high.
  • Each team made four shots from behind the arc.
  • Tampa claimed a 38-30 advantage in rebounds and narrowly won the turnover battle 17-16.
 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Wednesday marked the fifth time this season that Nelson-James has led the Fighting Knights in both rebounds and points, and it was the 15th time she has scored in double-figures.  
  • The loss to Tampa was Lynn's lowest-scoring game of the year.

The Fighting Knights return to action on Saturday, when they host Embry-Riddle in the regular season finale. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 pm from de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center.
