Women's Tennis Tackles Top Team in the Nation

Savannah, Ga. – Powerhouse Armstrong State University has been Lynn University's postseason adversary in the women's tennis world for the past few years but the Fighting Knights earned a big victory over the Pirates on Saturday. Third-ranked Lynn took down the two-time defending national champions and No. 1 ranked team in Division II by a final of 5-1. Lynn handed ASU its first loss at home since 2003, halting the longest current consecutive home match winning streak in collegiate tennis.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lynn helped its cause by building a 3-0 advantage through doubles action.
  • There was a heavyweight bout at the No. 1 doubles flight with the top two pairings in the nation going head-to-head. Lynn's top-ranked squad of Diana Bogolii and Rosalie Willig bested the No. 2 duo of Lena Lutzeier and Diana Stomlega in a close battle (8-6).
  • Grace Mpassy and Stefanie Stemmer followed up with an 8-2 win at No. 2 with Martina Gledacheva and Tereza Hejlova rounding out the doubles sweep at No. 3, 8-3.
  • Gledacheva and Stemmer posted straight-set wins to secure the triumph for the Blue and White. Gledacheva won at No. 4, 6-2, 6-2 and Stemmer took the No. 5 matchup, 6-4, 6-2.
  • Mpassy and Willig were each up a set against nationally-ranked opponents at No. 2 and 3, respectively.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • The Pirates saw their incredible winning streak at home come to an end. They had won 167 straight at home, dating back to March 13, 2003.
  • ASU knocked Lynn out of the NCAA postseason in both 2015 and 2016 before going on to win the national championship.
  • Lynn's last victory over the Pirates was in the 2011 regular-season finale when ASU was also ranked No. 1 and Lynn was No. 3.
