Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – It has been a record-breaking season for Lynn volleyball that culminated Thursday night in the program's first-ever Sunshine State Conference championship. They captured the outright title with a win over Embry-Riddle that kind of sums up why they have been so successful this season.
After dropping the first set, they found themselves in a back-and-forth fifth set before scoring the final three points to win the match and claim the conference championship outright.
"The biggest difference between this season and last, is chemistry," said Lynn head volleyball coach Adam Milewski. "It took some time but with all the returning players we have it became a strength of ours."
Biatriz Souza Berti is one of just two seniors on the team and has had her own history-making campaign. She became the first setter in SSC history to win player of the week honors three-consecutive weeks and her success is almost directly tied to the teams.
"This just feels amazing," said Souza Berti. "It is really special to be able to accomplish this during my final year here at Lynn and to do so with this team."
Sienna Kelley has a very similar story to Souza Berti. She came in last season as a junior college transfer and her increased playing time and contributions have helped take the Fighting Knights offense to the next level.
"This season has been an emotional roller coaster," said Kelley. "We have broken or set so many records it has been so exciting."
The two biggest records to fall go hand-in-hand, most wins in a single season and longest winning streak. While glancing at the box scores can tell you Lynn is playing at a different level, there is a common theme as to why the team believes they have won 26 games already this season and 13 in a row.
"This year we know how to handle team drama and everyone understands each other so much better," Souza Berti said.
"The team dynamic is so consistent. Everyone is always pushing everyone else to get better and everyone wants to accomplish the same goal," Kelley said.
Having already achieved so much it is easy to think a group of 18-to-22 year-olds might be feeling like they have already accomplished the goals for this season. Not the case with this group.
"We want to win regionals. We want more," Souza Berti said.
The more starts Friday night when they close out the regular season at Florida Tech at 7 p.m.
