Gaumer sets school-record, Mullins runs third-fastest 5k in school history

Boca Raton, Fla.  It was a rainy night at South County Park, but despite a lightning delay of nearly one hour, the Lynn University men's and women's cross country teams began their season with some incredible debuts. In their first races as Fighting Knights, Freshman Luc Gaumer set the school record for the men's 5k, while Freshman Brooke Mullins ran the third-fastest 5k time in Lynn women's cross country history.

MEN'S:

  • Gaumer led the way for the Fighting Knights with a third-place finish in a time of 15:45. He was the top Division II runner in the race.
  • Collin Clark was the second Fighting Knight to cross the finish line in a time of 16:36. The effort was good enough for 18th place. Hot on his heels, teammate Philip Henderson, finished in 19th place with a time of 16:42.
  • Freshman Cameron Matejka was the fourth Fighting Knight to finish, completing the course in 17:00. He finished the race in 26th place. 
  • Sophomore Evan Cardec rounded out the top five for the Fighting Knights with a 28th place finish in a time of 17:04.  Freshman Joseph Haynes crossed the line right behind him, completing the course in 17:11 and finishing in 29th place.
  • The men finished fourth overall and were the top finishing Division II team at the event. Their average team time was 16:37.40.

WOMEN'S:

  • Mullins raced her way to the third-fastest women's 5k time in school history. Her 18:43.91 landed her in sixth place in the race. Like Gaumer, she was the fastest Division II runner of the evening.
  • Freshman Kylee Baird crossed the line second for the Fighting Knights. Her time of 19:57.47 landed her in 20th place, and just off the top-10 times in Lynn history.
  • Freshmen Daria Cuellar-Hernandez and Analiese Fabrizi were the next two Lynn runners to cross the finish line. Cuellar-Hernandez finished 44th with a time of 21:37.42, while Fabrizi finished 53rd with a time of 22:41.78.
  • Sophomore Natalia Kalmeijer finished 66th with a time of 26:17.77 to round out the scoring for the Fighting Knights. It was the first 5k she had ever run at Lynn.
  • The Fighting Knights finished 7th in the race with an average team time of 21:51.67, and they were the highest-placing Division II team. Four of their five scoring runners were freshmen, and all five of them were making their collegiate 5k debut.

UP NEXT:
Lynn will have a short turnaround, as they are set to race this coming Saturday at the Palm Beach Atlantic Invitational. The men are set to run at 7:30 a.m. and the women will start at 8:15 a.m. The races will be held at the Rinker Athletic Complex in West Palm Beach, Fla.
