Mertins named Academic All-American

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University senior Luna Mertins was named to the NCAA Division II 2022-23 Academic All-America Women's Swimming & Diving First Team as chosen by the College Sports Communications, Monday.

Mertins carries a 3.83 grade point average and majors in psychology at Lynn. She is one of 10 student-athletes named to the first team and one of 34 honorees on one of the three Academic All-America teams.

In the history of the Fighting Knight women's swimming program, Mertins is just the fifth all-time Academic All-American and the first since 2018-19. She is the fourth first-team honoree for Lynn.

Mertins capped the '22-23 swimming season by becoming Lynn's most decorated student-athlete in the history of the athletic department.

She totaled six All-American awards at this year's NCAA Championships, earning the honors in the 800 freestyle relay, 200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 400 medley relay, 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke.

A year ago, Mertins earned four All-American awards and was crowned National Champion in the 100 butterfly.

Mertins, a 10-time All-American, helped the Lynn women to a program-best seventh place finish at the NCAA Championships two weeks ago.

Mertins is a two-time All-Sunshine State Conference First Team honoree and was named the league's Freshman of the year following the 2021-22 season.
