Box Score St. Leo, Fla. – Lynn University's women's soccer team picked up its second loss at the hands of Saint Leo, falling 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. Meghan Dolan stopped a career-high six shots but the Fighting Knights record drops to 6-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Nearly identical to the first meeting between the two teams, the Blue & White had the opportunity to grab the lead as Kirstie Schults broke freeof the defense for a one-on-one with keeper Laura Carstens. Carstens, though, made a diving stop to keep the game scoreless.
It looked as though LU would head to the locker room tied with the sixth-ranked Lions (10-0-0, 3-0-0) but a breakdown in the back with 50 seconds remaining gave SLU all it needed for the victory. A looping pass by Cassie Barbaresi caught the LU defense in limbo and Jamie Smith beat Dolan to the punch and lifted a shot to the center of net.
Lynn had a pair of second-half chances but couldn't capitalize on either. The first came minutes into the period when Melissa Ortiz sent in a cross from the right side through the six-yard box but the Knights couldn't get a toe on the ball.
A second opportunity arose in the 84th minute off a corner from the right flag post. Lina Forsman sent in a ball to the middle of the box and Paige Meggison came in unmarked to one-time a shot just over the cross bar.
The Fighting Knights return to action on Tuesday, October 4, at 7 p.m. when they travel to Winter Park, Fla., to battle nationally-ranked Rollins.
