Livingston, Ala. – Lynn University's baseball team missed its chance to split its double-header at West Alabama, falling 11-0 and 3-2 to the Tigers on Saturday. Mike Diorio was the jumpstarter on offense, going 2-for-3 with a run batted in and two stolen bases while Collin McGowan allowed one run in six innings. The Fighting Knights drop to 4-5 overall.
McGowan had his best start wearing the Blue & White in game two of the double-header. The junior transfer had failed to get past the second in his previous two outings. He walked a pair in the first inning but slick fielding got him out of the jam before he settled down.
Lynn grabbed the 1-0 lead in the third inning as West Alabama's starter wrestled with control problems. Alex Bello opened the frame with a walk but advanced two bases on a wild pitch and passed ball. Austin Smith then brought him across home plate with a ground ball to short.
A home run in the fourth knotted the game at one but LU jumped back on top in the fifth when Diorio launched a sacrifice fly to deep right field to score Leo Carrillo.
The Tigers (5-5), however, were able to get to closer Jason Whelan, logging a base hit, earning a walk then tying the game 2-2 with a single by Jay Jennings. Lynn issued an intentional walk to load the bases but Chris Duncan hit a weak dribbler to second base for the game-winning RBI.
West Alabama ran away with the first game as starter Jeb Huber earned his third win on the season by holding LU to four hits with six strikeouts.
A 2-0 lead by UWA grew to 8-0 after the Knights committed a pair of errors that led to six runs. Jason Beaumont (1-1) was on the receiving end of the loss despite pitching six innings with five strikeouts and no walks.
These two teams meet-up for the final game of the series on Sunday at noon. Fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.LynnFightingKnights.com and selecting "Game Central."
