Box Score Saint Leo, Fla. – Lynn University's baseball team dropped its series opener to Saint Leo 4-3 on Friday night. Anthony Boza smacked a three-run home run and Andrew Virgili struck out eight Lions in seven innings of work. The Fighting Knights drop to 10-9 overall and 0-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.
Saint Leo (9-10, 1-0 SSC) had little trouble getting its bats on the ball as it recorded four hits, two of which were for extra bases, in the opening frame to go on top 2-0. Despite the rough start, Virgili settled down to strike out six batters through the first three innings.
The Blue & White took its first and only lead of the game in the top of the third inning. Johnny Broderick opened the frame with a lead-off single and Mike Diorio kept the rally alive following a hit by pitch, leading up to Boza's bomb. The junior transfer turned on the first offering from Aaron Brandt and sent it over the left field fence to make it a 3-2 game.
Saint Leo was able to strike back in the fourth and fifth innings to tie and later take the lead. The second triple of the contest led to the Lions fourth run while a wild pitch and single by Ryan Powers gave SLU the 4-3 advantage.
Virgili surrendered four runs on 10 hits and tied his career-high with eight K's. Brandt fanned three in 6.1 while allowing on three runs on seven hits.
