Box Score 2 Saint Leo, Fla. – Rebounding from a tough loss the previous night, Lynn University's baseball team regrouped to take the double-header, 7-3 and 7-2, from Saint Leo on Saturday. Jason Beaumont and Kyle Wolfe earned the victories on the mound while Dane Derstine went 4-for-8 with three runs batted in at the plate. The Fighting Knights improve to 12-9 overall and 2-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Down 1-0 in the top of the third, the Blue & White exploded for five runs on five hits to take the lead for not only the first game but the remainder of the series. Back-to-back singles by Kyle Radzewski and Austin Smith, followed by Mike Diorio getting hit by a pitch, loaded the bases for LU. Anthony Boza then drove home one of his teammates with a single through the right side of the infield and Derstine came through with a two-run single a batter later. Eric Herrera and Phil Mannelly added to Lynn's lead with run scoring hits.
Beaumont picked up his fourth win of the year on the hill, matching teammate Andrew Virgili's victory total. The junior transfer fanned five lions in six innings before giving way to Shawn Kale. Kale dominated Saint Leo's hitters to the tune of one hit in three innings with two K's.
Saint Leo (9-12, 1-2 SSC) made things interesting in the sixth, taking advantage of a Knights' error to score two and make it a 5-3 game. Luckily, LU answered back with two runs in the visitor's half of the seventh, getting one run off a Lion's error and another off a Mannelly sacrifice fly.
Lynn wasted little time in getting Wolfe run support, putting two runs on the scoreboard in the second inning of game two. Derstine led off the frame with a double down the left field line and two batters later scored off a Richie McVey sacrifice fly. Patrick Roedel added LU's second run with a towering double off the center field wall to score Mannelly.
A run in the fourth by SLU cut the Knights' advantage to 2-1 but the Blue & White added two more runs in the sixth and another three in the seventh for good measure. Wes Soto brought home one run with a bases loaded single while Boza, Derstine and Herrera each added RBI base knocks.
Wolfe went the distance in getting his first career victory, striking out three without issuing a walk.
The Blue & White returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 15, at 3 p.m. when they host Molloy at the McCusker Sports Comlex. Fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.LynnFightingKnights.com and selecting "Game Central."
