BOCA RATON, Fla. – A two-out RBI single by Danny Herzog in the seventh inning broke a stalemate and led to Lynn University's baseball team pulling out a 5-3 victory over Molloy on Tuesday. Herzog was one of five Fighting Knights hitters to drive in runs while five relief pitchers combined to allow one hit over four innings. Lynn improves to 13-9 overall.
With the game tied at three in the bottom of the seventh, the Blue & White were looking for any offensive spark. Patrick Roedel kept the inning alive when he legged out a slow roller to third, giving LU runners on the corners with two away. Down in the count 0-2, Herzog ripped a line drive into left field to score Eric Herrera and put the Knights ahead 4-3.
Leo Carrillo provided the insurance run in the eighth when he lifted a RBI single into shallow left, allowing Kyle Radzewski to score from second base.
Lou Viamontes earned his first start for the Knights and did a good job on the mound. Going four innings, the junior transfer allowed three runs, one earned, on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Lynn's relievers, Ryan Digiose, Eric Pfefer, Corey Adelman, Sam Jones (2-0) and Jason Whelan (four saves), held Molloy's bats at bay from the fifth inning on with one hit. In addition, Digiose picked off two runners and Herzog threw out a base stealer at third.
The Lions (6-7) were able to strike first, with Carlos Guzman leading off the game with a double off the chalk in left field. Two batters later, Robert LaRusso brought him home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Lynn knotted the game at one in the home half. Austin Smith displayed his speed by beating out a routine ground ball to short and then stealing second. His hustle was rewarded when Anthony Boza knocked him home with an RBI single to right center field.
A two-out error and passed ball in the second led to a pair of unearned runs for Molloy but the Knights were able to capitalize themselves on a Lions gaffe in the third. A poor throw off a Boza ground ball extended the frame and Molloy pitcher Justin Jorgensen caught a case of the wild bug, walking two batters and hitting two more to drive in two runs.
The Blue & White get back to work on Tuesday when they host No. 6 Franklin Pierce at 3 p.m. Fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.LynnFightingKnights.com and selecting "Game Central."
