Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – Another dominating performance on the mound and key hits at the plate carried Lynn University's baseball team to a 6-2 victory over Rollins on Friday. For the second consecutive week Andrew Virgili set a career-high in strikeouts, this time with 11 Ks, while freshman Steven Fernandez provided the offensive punch with a pair of runs batted in. The Fighting Knights pick up their fifth straight win to improve to 18-13 overall and 3-4 in the Sunshine State Conference.
A right-handed junior out of Tampa, Fla., Virgili (6-3) mowed down Rollins' hitter's right from the beginning. He struck out four of the first six batters he faced and carried a no-hitter into the fifth until John Avanzino hit a bloop single over first base.
Lynn had built up a 3-0 lead by the time the Tars (18-13, 1-6 SSC) got onto the scoreboard. Fernandez drove in the first run for LU with an RBI triple to right center field in the second. The freshman outfielder then combined with Eric Herrera in the fourth to add to the Knights' lead. Herrera plated the first run with a double to left center field before Fernandez drove him home with a single through the right side.
Having seen Virgili for the third time around, Rollins' hitters were finally able to string together some hits in the seventh. Tony Brunetti led off the frame with a single and moved up 90 feet following a wild pitch. Avanzino then made it a 3-1 game with a run scoring single up the middle.
The Knights got that run back in the home half when Anthony Boza drove home Mike Diorio on a sacrifice fly after he belted the team's second triple of the day. Lynn had five extra base hits, including two doubles by Phil Mannelly.
Errors helped LU put the game out of reach in the eighth. A two-out blunder and walk put runners on the corners until a wild pitch from reliever Jack Murray allowed Mannelly to trot home. Kyle Radzewski put Lynn on top 6-1 with a RBI single back up the middle.
Shawn Kale earned his third save of the season, allowing two hits and striking out three in his two innings of relief work.
