Box Score Winter Park, Fla. – Contributions came from up and down the lineup as Lynn University's baseball team blasted Rollins 11-2 in the series opener on Friday. Shawn Kale tossed 5.2 no-hit innings, home runs came from Anthony Boza, Jason Matusik and Eric Herrera while Kyle Radzewski drove in a pair. The eighth-ranked Fighting Knights have won seven consecutive to improve to 19-7 overall and 3-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.
An error in the second inning by Nick Adams proved costly to the Tars (17-7) as Radzewski ripped a two-out, two-run double and Austin Smith followed with an RBI single. Adams error would have been the third out of the frame but instead the Blue & White jumped on the Rollins' gaffe.
Boza put LU on top 4-0 when he turned loose on a 0-2 fastball from Taylor Smith, launching his seventh home run over the left field fence. Matusik got into the long ball act in the fifth, ripping the first pitch he saw from Smith for his third bomb of the season.
Kale continued his case as one of the top pitchers in the SSC, pitching a perfect game through 4.2 innings and no-hitting Rollins in 5.2 frames. The senior right-hander fanned seven in 7.2 innings and just missed on reaching double-figures on a couple of pitches. He picked up his third victory on the mound.
The second error by the Tars infield helped Lynn extend its lead in the seventh. Radzewski opened the frame with a single and made his way across the diamond with a sacrifice bunt from Smith and ground ball to the right side of the infield from Mike Diorio. Boza then hit a sharp ball to third but Anthony Figliolia threw the ball away allowing LU to grab a 6-0 lead.
Rollins built up some momentum in the bottom of the eighth, finally getting to Kale. Back-to-back doubles to start put the first run for the Tars on the board and Sean Reilly took the second pitch he saw from reliever Andre Colon to right field cutting the deficit to 6-2. Colon, though, fanned the next batter to end the inning and later struck out two more in the ninth.
Whatever momentum Rollins thought it built in the eighth was quickly squashed when Lynn put five runs on the scoreboard. Diorio's first hit of the game was a triple into the right center field gap and he sat on third as Rollins loaded the bases with an intentional walk to Boza and hit batter to Matusik. Kamm Washington plated the first run with a perfectly placed squeeze bunt to the right side of the infield, bringing Herrera to the plate. The senior third baseman was ahead 3-1 in the count before Ben Blanton lofted a softball over the plate. Herrera smashed the pitch and sent it over the fence in left field for a grand slam, his first career home run.
Lynn closes out its series at Rollins with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 24. Fans can follow the action at LynnFightingKnights.com by selecting the Game Central icon.
