Box Score 2 Winter Park, Fla. – A laser throw by Alex Bello in the bottom of the seventh gunned down the tying run and helped Lynn University's baseball team capture a double-header split 3-5 and 4-3 over Rollins on Saturday afternoon. Jason Whalen was stellar on the mound in his third start, fanning four over 5.2 innings while Jason Matusik drove in two runs, including the game winner. The Fighting Knights took two of three from the Tars to improve to 20-8 overall and 4-2 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Leading 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, LU closer Andre Colon made quick work of the first two batters but a couple of questionable calls rattled the right-hander and put runners on second and third. With the tying run on second, Boston Langley smacked a 3-2 pitch into left field, allowing Brandon Curson to score.
Waved home by the third base coach, Greg Smith rounded third base unaware of the danger ahead. Bello collected the single and unleashed and laser throw to Joey Sharkey at home plate ending the game and sending the entire Fighting Knights squad rushing the field in celebration.
Lynn built up a 1-0 lead in game two when Matusik hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Austin Smith. Eric Herrera and Bello made it 3-0 in the third following back-to-back two-out RBI singles and Matusik added the final and eventual game-winning run in the fifth off his second sacrifice fly.
Whalen (3-2) allowed one hit through the first five innings of work, retiring 13 consecutive batters at one point. A two-out double by Kevin Mager scored Rollins' two runs in the sixth.
The Fighting Knights grabbed a 3-0 lead in game one. Sharkey put the first run on the board in the second with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Cory Elasik. Elasik used his legs in the later innings to set up LU's second run. The junior swiped two bases and scored on a wild pitch to give the Blue & White a 2-0 lead.
Mike Diorio plated the final run in the fifth with a two-out RBI single.
Ryan Gibbard took the mound in the first contest and fanned five batters in 5.2 innings of work. But a walk and two hits forced head coach Rudy Garbalosa to go to his bullpen. Unfortunately, Rollins (18-8, 1-2 SSC) was able to tie the game in the sixth and later take the lead in the seventh en route to a 5-3 victory.
Lynn returns to the diamond on Friday, March 30, when they travel to Lakeland, Fla., to battle Florida Southern. Fans can follow the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com by selecting the Game Central icon.
