Box Score 2 Lakeland, Fla. – Two times Lynn University's baseball team held leads, fell behind and mounted a comeback but each time Florida Southern emerged victorious as the Fighting Knights fell 6-2, 7-4 on Saturday. Anthony Boza belted two home runs and Kyle Radzewski smacked his first career home run but it was not enough. Lynn drops to 20-10 overall and 5-4 in the Sunshine State Conference while Florida Southern moves to 18-13 and 8-7 in the SSC.
It didn't take long for LU to go up in the opening contest after Boza smashed a solo shot into the trees in left in the first inning. The Moccasins, though, were able to double that total in the home half. Lynn starter Ryan Gibbard (4-2) breezed through the first two hitters with strikeouts but a 3-1 fastball to Mike Snyder was left over the plate for a home run and Austin Chubb followed with a long ball to put FSC on top 2-1.
Gibbard struck out seven in five innings pitched, surrendering four runs before being lifted for Austin Bailey. The redshirt freshman fanned five over three frames.
Another two-out run by Florida Southern increased its lead to 3-1 in the second but Lynn closed the gap in the fourth. Kamm Washington drove in his first RBI of the series with a single to left but the Fighting Knights stranded the tying run on third.
The Mocs were able to use the long ball two more times with home runs by Snyder and Brad Carlton to increase their team's lead to 6-2. Lynn had a chance to tie the game in the ninth but closer Nate Carter got Boza to fly out at the wall in center to end the game.
Game two proved more bizarre. Boza smashed his ninth home run of the season in the first, an opposite field shot that cleared the right field fence. Radzewski followed suit in the third, jumping all over a 1-0 fastball that was belt high and sending it into the trees in left center field.
Florida Southern used a two-out rally in the fourth to knot the game at 2. A walk, double and passed ball led to the Mocs first run before Kyle Gibbs' single evened the contest.
With two outs, a runner on third and the game tied in the fifth, Andre Colon was pitching to Chubb. A high fastball was waived off after a controversial balk was called, plating the leading run. The team rallied together and put runners on first and second with no outs in the sixth. Boza stepped to the plate and lifted a 3-1 pitch down and over the left field fence only to have it called back as foul. Florida Southern was able to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Mocs later added four runs in the sixth but LU had a chance to tie and take the lead by loading the bases in the top of the seventh. Unfortunately, Nat Carter fanned the final batter to secure the win.
Lynn returns to action on Tuesday, April 3, at 6:30 p.m. when it travels to Division I Florida Atlantic. Fans can follow the action at LynnFightingKnights.com by selecting the Game Central icon.
