Box Score 2 Carrollton, Ga.- Lynn University's volleyball team (14-7, 2-4 SSC) picked up two regional wins on Friday at the South Region Crossover hosted by the University of West Georgia. The Fighting Knights began the day with a 3-2, (17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 27-29, 15-13), win over Shorter (9-7). LU then swept the host school, West Georgia, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-19). Marissa Tandron recorded her fifth and sixth double-double performances of the season while Angie Caple had 28 kills over the course of the day.
The Fighting Knights dropped the opening set against Shorter, 17-25. Lizzy Raffa led the Blue & White with five kills while Tandron dished out 11 assists and Nikki Haben added seven digs. As a team LU hit .091 with 11 kills while the Hawks hit a .256 clip with 15 kills. SU's Jasmine Crook had a set-high six kills.
Lynn battled back to take the next set, 25-23, and even the match at 1-1. Caple and Sara Aloisio both had a set-high five kills. LU outhit Shorter 15-13 and held the Hawks to a .163 clip. Tandron had 12 assists and Knight recorded a set-high eight digs.
With a 25-22 win in the third set, Lynn had a 2-1 advantage in the match. The Fighting Knights hit .256 with just four errors and 14 kills with Caple leading the offense with a .333 clip in the set.
Shorter came out hot in the fourth set, with a 7-1 run to take its largest lead of the match. The Blue & White fought back to close the deficit by four on a service ace from Shauna Shortal. Lynn scored three consecutive points closing in on SU 20-22 and forced the Hawks to use their final timeout. LU stayed alive well into extra points but fell, 26-28, to Shorter in the end. Caple led Lynn with six kills.
The Blue & White trailed 8-11 in the fifth set but rallied to take the final set 15-13 for its 13th win of the season. Claire Angelich had three kills helping the Fighting Knights to a .217 hitting percentage.
Tandron had her second 50-assist game of her career in the victory with 53 and 13 digs, for her fifth double double of the season. Katie Knight and Raffa also had double-doubles in the win. Knight tallied 11 kills and 24 digs while Raffa had 12 kills and 19 digs. Haben had a season-high 38 digs with six assists of her own. Angelich matched her career-best with six blocks in the win.
Lynn continued its winning ways well into the second match of the against host school, University of West Georgia with a 3-0 sweep. Knight led the offense with 14 kills and seven digs while Elyse Fleck had a season-high ten kills with a .444 clip.
In the opening set Caple had five kills leading the Fighting Knights to a .333 hitting percentage. The Wolve's hit .270 but outhit the Blue & White 16-11 and were led by Emily Reul who had a set-high six kills.
Lynn trailed early in the second set, 5-12, but began to rally and close in on UWG's lead. Trailing by seven again later in the match, LU forced West Georgia into a timeout when the Knights cut the deficit to five. A kill by Fleck gave Lynn the lead at 23-22. The Blue & White went on to win the set 25-23 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Knight had a set-high eight kills while Fleck added seven of her own. LU had 19 kills to the Wolves' 11 while outhitting UWG by a slim .196-.195 clip.
With a 2-0 lead in the match the Fighting Knights took carried their momentum into the third set. LU held its biggest advantage at 21-14. West Georgia began to comeback late but the Blue & White held on for a 25-19 win to complete victory.
Aloisio had a team-high four stops at the net while Tandron added three blocks, 32 assists and 13 digs. Haben tallied 12 digs and two service aces.
Lynn moves to 14-7 overall and 2-4 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Fighting Knights take the court Satuday, October 19, for the second day of the regional crossover when they face Alabama Huntsville at 9 am. The Blue & White will then play West Alabama at 2 pm.
