Volleyball Splits Regional Matches in Georgia

Carrollton, Ga.-The Lynn University volleyball team (15-8, 2-4 SSC) split on the second day of the South Region Crossover hosted by West Georgia on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Knights swept Alabama Huntsville (25-22, 25-14, 27-25), to extend their win streak to three. West Alabama (9-10) went head-to-head later in the afternoon with LU, but the Blue & White fell in five sets, (25-23, 15-25, 25-18, 23-25, 17-15).  

Lynn came out hot in the opening set with a 7-1 run to start the match against the Chargers (7-13). UAH closed the gap to two at 13-11, but LU pulled ahead 19-15 forcing Alabama Huntsville into a timeout. Lynn emerged with a 25-22 win to take a 1-0 lead on the match. 

Strautniece had a set-high six kills helping the Fighting Knights to a .268 hitting percentage. Tandron dished out 16 assists while Haben had a set-high seven digs. The Blue & White outhit the Chargers 17-13 and held UAH to just a .186 clip. 

Leading 13-8 in the second set, LU would go on a 10-4 run. Lynn eased into a 25-12 second set victory to take a 2-0 advantage in the match. 

As a team the Blue & White hit .241 and held Alabama Huntsville to a -.031 clip with only seven kills and eight errors.

Lynn had its best offensive set in the third set despite trailing most of it. LU tied the set for the first time at 6-all after UAH got off to an early lead. The Chargers held off the Fighting Knights late into the match but the Blue & White began a rally that could not be stopped. A kill by senior Mandy McIntosh gave Lynn University its first lead at 23-22. Alabama Huntsville maintained the pressure, but Lynn pushed through with a  27-25 win. 

UAH's Haley Snyder had a set-high seven kills helping the Chargers to their best offensive performance of the match with a .236 clip and 18 kills. LU edged its opponents by just one kill with 19 total, but had a .306 clip with just four errors. 

Strautniece led the offense with a career-high 17 kills and 11 digs while also having her first career double-double. Tandron dished out 39 helpers with a career-high five service aces. McIntosh connected on three of six swings for a .500 clip with five digs. Haben had a match-high 18 digs. 

The Fighting Knights dropped the opening set 23-25 to the University of West Alabama. Lynn outhit the Tigers 14-11 but made seven crucial attack errors to UWA's four. Jessica Voyles led the offense for the Red & White with a set-high five kills. McIntosh had a set-high eight digs while Tandron dished out 10 helpers. 

In the second set LU came out on fire easing into a 25-15 win to even the match at 1-1. Lizzy Raffa connected on four of eight swings leading the team into a .367 clip. Tandron had 13 assists while Aloisio and Caple each added three kills apiece. 

West Alabama fired back in the third set with a 25-18 win, holding off a late LU push. The Tigers outhit Lynn 14-11 with a .250 hitting percentage. Strautniece and Angelich led with three kills each. 

Down 2-1 in the match, the Fighting Knights saw themselves in a 1-7 hole. West Alabama thought it led 10-3 but that all changed when LU rallied to erase the seven point deficit and take the lead with a kill by Raffa. With Aloisio at the line, eight unanswered points from the Blue & White secured a 25-23 win to force a fifth set. 

Strautniece led with six kills while Tandron had 14 assists. Raffa and Aloisio both had two service aces each. As a team LU hit .308 with a match-high 17 kills.  

In the fifth and final set, Lynn took an early lead before UWA would even the score at 4-all. The scoreboard flip-flopped throughout the match. LU forced the Tigers into a timeout when they came back from a 10-13 deficit with a pair of kills from Caple. West Alabama was able to escape with the slim 17-15 win for the regional victory. 

Caple had a season-high 20 kills while Tandron recorded a career-high 58 assists and a double-dounle with 14 digs. Four other Fighting Knights had double-digit digs while Strautniece had her second consecutive double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs. 

The Blue & White returns to the South Florida sun for a Sunshine State Conference matchup against Nova Southeastern (4-13, 0-6 SSC). First serve is set for 7 pm in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
