Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – After going down a run in the top of the eighth, two runs scored off a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning to lead Lynn University's baseball team to a 6-4 victory over Molloy on Sunday. Cory Elasik scored twice, including the game-winning run, and Enrique Perez notched his second consecutive three-hit game in helping the Fighting Knights win their sixth consecutive contest. Lynn improves to 14-6 overall.
After surrendering three runs in the top of the second, LU relievers tossed five innings of scoreless ball until a hiccup in the eighth. AJ Falletta had navigated his team through a jam in the seventh but found himself in one when the Lions put runners on second and third with one out. A ground out to second base put forth the leading run until Kyle Butcher came in and fanned Max Greenough to end the frame.
Pinch hitter Chris Piperno drew the inning-opening walk before ceding way to pinch runner Danny Carroll. Elasik then reached base for the third time in the day when he pushed a bunt in between first and second and legged out the through to the bag. It was then Joey Sharkey's turn to advance the tying and winning runs with his second sacrifice bunt of the game.
Alex Freedman grinded out his at-bat against reliever Patrick Brown, earning a walk after eight pitches, of which the final toss skidded past the catcher to the back stop. Carroll easily scored to tie the game up but the Fighting Knights were not satisfied. Freedman took off to second base, forcing a throw from Ray McCourt, but Elasik ran through third base and slid under the play at the plate to put LU on top 5-4.
Kamm Washington added an insurance run with a squeeze bunt towards first, scoring Freedman.
Lynn took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after two Lions misplays. Perez was able to move up 90 feet off a passed ball after leading off with a walk and scored when first baseman Erik Pyle bobbled the potential inning-ending ground out from Jason Matusik.
Molloy took advantage of the wildness of starter Troy Mannebach in the second to go on top 3-1. Michael Rahn singled to open the frame and easily made his way to third following two walks. Greg Walsh then cleared the bases with a double down the right field line. Mannebach ended the inning with a double-play that saw Walsh thrown out making a wide turn at third base.
Freedman drove in runs for the Fighting Knights in the second and fourth inning to tie the game up. In his first at bat, the sophomore shortstop beat out a slow chopper to short to score Elasik while a sacrifice fly to left field allowed Mike Gonzalez to even the score at three.
Mannebach lasted 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and three runs with four walks and three strikeouts. Peter Graffeo pitched 3.1 innings of relief with four hits and one strikeout. Butcher (1-0) earned his first victory with a perfect 1.1 frames pitched with three K's.
Lynn returns to action on Tuesday, March 12, at 3 p.m. when it hosts UMass Lowell. Fans can listen to the game live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
