Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. - Lynn University's baseball team could do no wrong in its Sunshine State Conference opener, setting a program record for runs scored and hits in a 38-4 victory over Rollins on Friday afternoon. The Fighting Knights 38 runs are tied for the eighth-most in NCAA Division II history and are the most since Lincoln Memorial tallied 42 in 2008. Lynn improves to 15-7 overall and 1-0 in the SSC.
Individually, Paul Stortini set a new school record with six hits and tied the mark with five runs scored. He also drove in six runs and walked once, concluding the day 6-for-7. Jason Matsuik went 3-for-5 with four runs scored, a grand slam and six RBI and Mike Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with three walks, four RBI and five runs scored. Every member of the team scored at least once, 13 of 15 batters logged at least one hit and 14-of-15 players drove in at least one run.
Lynn's 38 RBIs are the fourth most in NCAA Division II history.
Rollins (13-8, 0-1 SSC), which suffered its worst loss in school history, actually led 3-0 after two innings. Hunter Mayfield led off the game with a double to right center field and scored two batters later of Brian Lattanzi's sacrifice fly. Brandon Curson then made it 2-0 in the opening frame with a double to left field.
The Tars added to their lead in the second when Matt Hendricks smashed an 0-2 fastball over the fence in left field to give his team a 3-0 lead.
Lynn, though, would bat around for the first of four times, sending 10 players to the plate. An error by Rollins' shortstop kept the frame going and loaded the bases for LU. Matusik unloaded on the first pitch he saw from Brett Meuller to snap the 3-3 tie and commence the route.
The Fighting Knights scored two in the third and two more in the fourth, with Enrique Perez, Alex Freedman and Sal Giardina logging RBI hits. The fifth inning saw Lynn send 16 batters to the plate and score 11 runs.
Rollins could not stop Lynn as the Knights batted around in the next two innings, scoring nine in the sixth and seven in the seventh.
Joe Perrotta (4-2) earned the win on the mound, allowing nine hits and four runs with three walks and two strikeouts in six innings. TJ Sullivan then pitched three scoreless, hitless innings of relief to pick up the wild save.
