Late-Inning Runs Secure Victory for Baseball

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Two runs in the final three innings led Lynn University's baseball team to a 5-4 victory over New Haven on Wednesday afternoon.  Ryan Lashley snapped a 3-3 tie with his third home run of the season and the Fighting Knights bullpen allowed one run over the final five frames.  Lynn improves to 17-9 overall.

A key error by the Chargers helped LU grab a 3-0 lead in the second inning.  After Jason Matusik and Sal Giardina collected singles, Joey Sharkey laced a base hit into right field where Stephen Clout watched as the ball skidded under his glove to the fence, scoring two runs.  Cory Elasik followed with a perfect squeeze bunt and the Knights had their three-run lead.

Kevin Lee was able to go four innings in his first start in the Blue & White but two errors helped New Haven (6-4) knot the game at three.  The first gaffe came on a failed pick-off attempt in the third and pinch runner Tim Geer was able score later when Lee's pitch sailed into the back stop.

Another error in the fourth, this time on a ground ball in the infield, extended the inning and put runners on first and second with two outs.  Nick Nunziato then tied the game with a triple to dead center field.  Lee, though, was able to get out of the jam by fanning Geer.

Eric Pfefer tossed 1.2 scoreless innings before ceding way to AJ Falleta (3-0) with runners on first and second and two outs.  Falleta would fan Geer to end thoughts of a rally and strike out the lefty once more in the eighth to end a threat.

Ryan Lashley turned the game in LU's favor with one swing of his bat, sending a 2-1 fastball from soft-tossing lefty Connor Moriarty high into the trees in left field.    Luke Fosterthen gave up the eventual game-winning run when he allowed a lead-off single to Mike Gonzalez and a two-base sacrifice bunt to Enrique Perez.  After an intentional walk to Alex Freedman, Ryan Carmona drove in the deciding run with a squeeze bunt down the first base line.

Kyle Butcher earned his first career save but not without a little tension.  Butcher quickly retired the first two batters but gave up three consecutive singles, all on 1-2 counts, as New Haven cut the lead to 5-4.  Zach Collett ran another 1-2 count but flew out weakly to center field to end the game.

The Fighting Knights return to the diamond on Friday, March 22, with a noon doubleheader against Sunshine State Conference leaders Florida Southern.  Fans can catch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
