Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – Scoring three runs in the final two innings, Lynn University's baseball overcame a two-run deficit to win 4-3 and sweep the three-game series over Florida Southern. This is the third sweep in program history over the Moccasins and second in a Sunshine State Conference series. Enrique Perez drove in the game-winning run as the top four Fighting Knights hitters combined to go 9-for-16 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Lynn improves to 20-9 overall and 5-1 in the SSC.
Since beating the Moccasins five times in 2009, Florida Southern had won eight of the last nine meetings, including sweeps in 2010 and 2011. Lynn swept the SSC regular season meetings and both match-ups in the 2009 NCAA Tournament and also took all three games in a non-conference series in 1997.
Down 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Perez opened the frame with a four pitch walk, moved on to second base following some wildness from reliever Nick Krolczyk and advanced to third with Alex Freedman's third single of the afternoon. Florida Southern (12-14, 6-3 SSC) went to the bullpen to keep the lead but Mike Czenszak surrendered back-to-back singles to Jason Matusik and Paul Stortini as LU knotted things up at three.
Andrew Melchor (3-0) took the mound in the ninth and charged up his teammates with a scoreless ninth, fanning two batters, including Connor Szczerba swinging with a runner on base.
The bottom of the Lynn lineup had troubles against the Mocs but Mike Gonzalez made up for any deficiencies by drawing a one-out four-pitch walk against reliever Nate Carter. Perez stepped to the plate and went ahead 2-0 before Carter evened the count to 2-2. The junior outfielder turned on the next pitch and sent it down the right field line with Gonzalez chugging around the base path to score the winning run.
Jed Vandernaald did not factor into his first decision, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing six hits, three runs and one walk while striking out four batters. The righ-handed hurler tossed 4.1 perfect innings before running into trouble in the fifth.
A bloop infield single by Kyle Jackson appeared to throw Vandernaald off his game as he walked the next batter on five pitches and surrendered a RBI double to Brad Carlton to tie the game at 1-1. Another Mocs RBI double in the sixth helped them take before Vandernaald was pulled in the seventh.
AJ Falleta did his relief part, striking out lefty JJ Downum on three pitches before being lifted for Alex Lamrouex. The freshman righty gave up a RBI single, putting Florida Southern on top 3-1, but Gonzalez saved a run by gunning down Jimmy Correnti as he tried to score from home. Gonzalez has a team-best five outfield assists this year.
Ryan Lashley, 2-for-4, was able to extend his hitting streak to nine-games in the fourth when he led off with a solo home run, his fourth of the year, to put Lynn ahead 1-0. Matusik also extended his hitting streak with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
