Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's baseball team won its fourth consecutive game and eighth in its last nine with an 11-0 victory over Wilmington on Friday afternoon. The shutout is the second consecutive for the Fighting Knights, marking the first time since 2003 that has been accomplished. Joe Perrotta went the distance for his first career complete game shutout while Jason Matusik and Chris Piperno drove in four runs combined. Lynn improves to 12-6 overall.
Defensively, Alex Freedman tallied a program-best 11 assists. The Blue & White have now forced goose eggs on their opponents in 19 consecutive innings.
Lynn scored in each of the first two innings to build a 4-0 lead over the Wildcats (8-6). Ryan Lashley drove home Kamm Washington to start the offensive escapade and trotted home when Matusik launched a double off the top of the left center field fence. Cory Elasik ended the scoring in the first with a sacrifice fly to and Enrique Perez later added two-out RBI single in the second.
Perrotta (3-2) was able to keep the Wilmington hitters off-balance with an array of pitches. Of the 109 tosses, 76 went for strikes while 17 outs were on the ground. The senior right-hander struck out three, walked one and allowed six hits.
Wilmington had its chance to cut into Lynn's lead in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs Joe Marciano popped into an infield fly, Perrotta struck out Kyle Lindstrom looking on an inside curveball and JR Gregory flew out weakly to right field to end any hopes of getting across home plate.
Looking to keep the game close, the Wildcats intentionally walked Joey Sharkey to load the bases in the sixth, hoping for an inning-ending double-play from Piperno. The senior designated hitter had other thoughts, tattooing a ball into the right center gap to clear the bases.
Lynn's offense did not relent, added two more in the seventh, the first of which came off a triple to the deepest part of the park by Matusik and ended with a RBI single by Mike Gonzalez. A wild pitch in the eighth capped off the Blue & White scoring, allowing Freedman to score.
Matusik finished the day 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Kamm Washington and Freedman also scored twice.
