Lynn Baseball Claims First SSC Win on the Road

WINTER PARK, Fla. –No. 22-ranked Lynn University's baseball  team got another solid pitching performance from its staff as it held Rollins College to just two runs on five hits to claim a 3-2 victory over the Tars in a Sunshine State Conference match-up Saturday night at Alfond Stadium.

Jed Vandernaald (4-0) started the ballgame going seven innings to pick-up his fourth win of the season. The right-hander allowed five hits and two  runs while striking out four batters and issuing three walks.

Bill Mendek closed out the contest tossing the final two and a third innings to preserve the win. Mendek only allowed one hit while striking out three batters back-to-back to end the game.

Offensively, Lynn got things going early, scoring in the first inning. Sal Giardina smacked a ball up the middle, finding a gap and scoring Tom Kain. Rollins answered back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to even the score, 1-1. 

An inning later Kain drilled a ball deep into left field scoring Enrique Perez to take the 2-1 lead over the Tars. The advantage was short lived as RCU would come back once again in the bottom of the third with a run to tie the score and put pressure on Lynn .

The Blue and White opened up the fifth inning with a solo homerun by Kain, who would score the winning run of the game.

The win improves the No. 22 ranked Fighting Knights to 9-3 on the season and earns them their first win in SSC play.

Kain went 3-for-5 on the night with two hits and two RBI's while Giardina went 2-for-4 with two hits and an RBI.

Isaiah Sakany suffered the loss for the Tars,  going five innings, giving up five hits and three runs.

Lynn returns to the diamond on Saturday, February 22 taking on Rollins in the second  game of a three game set at Alfond Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. with the second game to follow. Fans can log onto lynnfightingknights.com to listen to the game live and follow live stats.
