Baseball Falls in Pitcher's Duel

Box Score

Lakeland, Fla. – Jed Vandernaald went inning for inning and pitch for pitch in a duel with Clay Chapman but Lynn University's 13th-ranked baseball team fell 1-0 to No. 24 Florida Southern on Friday evening.  Vandernaald tossed seven shutout frames with two strikeouts.  The Fighting Knights drop to 19-5 overall and 3-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.

Florida Southern (16-6, 4-0 SSC) doubled Lynn's hitting output through seven innings, 2-1, riding Chapman (2-2) for the entire game.  The Moccasins right-handed hurler set down the lineup in order in seven of the nine innings he pitched.

Lynn had an opportunity in the third inning as Matt Ackerman reached second base safely on a Chapman throwing error to lead off the frame.  The Fighting Knights, though, could not move him over on the next three batters and the game remained scoreless.

Vandernaald ran into trouble in a couple of innings but was able to aptly maneuver through the bumpy terrain.  Florida Southern managed to load the bases in the fourth but the senior right-hander fanned Casey Eddinger to end the threat.

Bill Mendek (3-1) picked up his first loss of the season despite pitching well.  He set down the first two batters he faced before surrendering a harmless infield single to Keith Curcio.  Curcio stole second two pitches later and Trey Vavra drove him home with a single to left field.

The Fighting Knights complete its three-game series against Florida Southern with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.  Fans can listen to the game live at LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
