Box Score 2 Lakeland, Fla. – A day after getting shut out and recording just one hit in nine innings, Lynn University's 13th-ranked baseball team scored 14 runs on 22 hits to sweep its doubleheader against No. 24 Florida Southern 11-6 and 3-1 on Saturday. The Fighting Knights starting pitching continued its stellar play by allowing only two earned runs in 14 innings pitched while Thomas Kain went 5-for-9 with three doubles, a home run, three runs scored and four runs batted in. Lynn improves to 21-5 overall and 5-1 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Last-inning heroics in game two gave the Blue & White just their second conference series victory at Florida Southern in program history, and first since 2006. Tied 1-1 in the top of the seventh, Lynn was able to put runners on second and third with one out. A squeeze bunt did not go in the Fighting Knights favor but Alex Freedman was hit by a pitch on the next at-bat. Kain then ripped a 2-2 off-speed pitch to left to drive home the winning runs.
Andrew Melchor came on in the bottom-half of the inning and set down the Mocs 1-2-3 to earn his third save of the year. Starter Travis Connelly improved to 2-1 on the season after tossing six shutout innings, allowing three hits, one run and issuing one walk.
Kain drove in the first run of the game with a RBI double in the third, scoring Enrique Perez from second base. Florida Southern (17-8, 4-2 SSC) was able to equalize it in the home half of the third when a wild pitch allowed JJ Downup to score.
Lynn's offense awoke from its slumber in the doubleheader opener. A 1-0 deficit turned into a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning following a Florida Southern error. Sal Giardina drove in the first of his three runs with a base hit up the middle and Mike Gonzalez drove in two more with a base-knock through the right side of the infield. Michael Stemle added to the team's lead with an infield single to short.
Giardina put Lynn on top 5-1 in the sixth with another RBI single and Ben Schwanburg increased the team's advantage to five with a RBI groundout.
Starter Daniel Patrick (4-0) allowed eight hits over seven innings with three runs, of which only one was earned. Lynn's defense faltered in the fifth when a two-out error led to two runs but Patrick maneuvered through trouble in the seventh when he got Keith Curcio to pop out with runners on first and second.
The Fighting Knights' relief core had a little trouble but Kyle Butcher was able to limit the Mocs damage in the eighth to one run with two quick outs and the bases loaded.
Kain served up his team-leading fourth home run in the seventh and Perez added another run with a RBI single in the eighth. Lynn's last runs came in the ninth with a RBI triple to dead center field from Alex DeBellis, another RBI single from Giardina and a sacrifice fly by Stemle.
DeBellis, Giardina and Kain combined to go 9-for-14 with eight runs scored and five RBIs for game two.
