Box Score 2 BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University concluded play in the Boca Raton Courtyard by Marriott Classic with a victory over Fort Valley State in the afternoon before losing to Colorado Christian in the finale. With the split Lynn is now 4-2 overall.
After the two games Katie Knight had 21 kills on a .444 clip with 10 digs over the seven sets. Marissa Tandron provided a combined 69 assists on the day while Nikki Haben had 23 digs in the split.
In the first match of the afternoon Lynn defeated Fort Valley State 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-8). Knight led the offense with 11 kills followed by Elyse Fleck and Nicol Colona who each had seven kills and a .583 hit percentage. Tandron helped the offense with 30 assists while also pacing the defense with seven digs.
In her first-career start Colona began with three-straight service aces as part of a 5-0 run that gave Lynn the lead in the first set. Later in the frame the frame Knight recorded back-to-back kills to spark a 6-0 run to put the Fighting Knights up 23-12. In the opener Claire Angelich led the team with five kills while Tandron tossed a game-high 13 assists. Knight was the defensive anchor in the set with three digs, Colona and Tandron both provided a pair of digs.
The Blue & White came out strong in the second set scoring the first three points and ended just as strong with a 6-0 spree to go up 2-0. Lynn hit a match-high .393 in the set, led by Knight's .714 clip and five kills. Tandron had 11 kills while she and Haben each had three digs.
Lynn was in control the entire third set, scoring nine of the first 10 points. Defensively the Fighting Knights defense held the Wildcats to a -.250 percentage with only two kills. Colona had a team-high three kills in the set while tied with Haben and Tandron for most digs with two.
The Classic's finale pitted Lynn against Colorado State, where the home side fell 3-1 (23-25, 20-25, 25-12, 18-25). Fleck, Knight and Lydia West all provided 10 kills in the loss. Tandron had a game-high 39 assists while a plethora of players contributed digs, led by Haben with 18. Angelich was credited with a pair of solo blocks and eight blocks assisted in the contest.
Lynn kept close with Colorado Christian and even led 21-18 late in the set, but a 5-0 from the Panthers gave them the lead, which they held for the victory. In the second set the Fighting Knights led in the early part of the contest but could not hold onto the lead as a late 5-0 spree gave them set point. Through the first two sets Angelich had five total blocks.
Set three saw the Fighting Knights bring the score to 2-1 with a game-high .333 clip and holding their competitors to five kills and a -.120 hitting percentage. West sparked the offense with three kills while Colona had three digs.
In the final set Lynn fell behind early and could not overcome a 20-kill effort from the Cougars. Fleck and West each had three kills in the finale while Tandron provided 11 assists and Haben had six digs.
