Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's volleyball team did what no other Sunshine State Conference team could do so far this season, defeating Nova Southeastern 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-15, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon in the de Hornle Center. With the victory Lynn improves to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in SSC play.
Freshman Morgan Dulaney sparked the team with her first career double-double for the Blue & White, producing career highs in kills and digs with 14 and 12. Katie Knight also recorded her first double-double of the campaign with 12 digs and 11 assists.
Elyse Fleck and Lydia West also provided double-digit kills as the team totaled 61 kills.
The victory for the Fighting Knights saw season-highs posted with Marissa Tandron logging 47 assists and Nikki Haben providing 24 digs. Defensively Lizzy Raffa Joined Haben, Dulaney and Knight as Knights with double-doubles
In the opener Lynn never trailed by more than two, while leading by as many as six. Trailing 9-10 Lynn scored three quick points to take the lead and force a Nova timeout, the home team did not trail for the remainder of the set. With a 16-12 the Sharks had their longest run with four straight points to bring it back to within one, but Lynn responded with a point following a timeout to bring the lead to 18-16. To finish the opening set Lynn recorded three kills in the final four points to go up 1-0. The Fighting Knights hit a game-high .316 percentage to take the first battle, with West leading the offense with five kills.
Nova knotted the contest in the second set, grabbing the lead quickly and holding it. After being tied 4-4 Lynn never matched Nova Southeastern's score in the set. With the momentum from the previous stanza the Sharks used an early 4-0 run to take a 7-4 lead, but Lynn responded with a pair of points to bring it within one. A service ace and a kill back-to-back from Raffa highlighted the Fighting Knights 4-0 spree that put them ahead 10-8, a lead that would hold for the rest of the set. Dulaney played a crucial part in the third frame with six kills on a .556 clip and seven digs.
After giving up the first two points in the fourth set Lynn quickly responded and used a 5-0 run, with Fleck having three kills in the streak, to take the lead and go ahead 9-5. The continued in Lynn's favor leading 20-12 with match point in sight before Nova responded with a 8-0 run threating to force a fifth set. Knight gave the Blue & White a much needed kill to prevent the Sharks from tying the score at 21-21. With match point in their fingertips Dulaney smashed the ball on the Sharks' side of the court to give the Fighting Knights the victory.
