Box Score Lantana, Fla. - Another dominant pitching display by Lynn University's 11th-ranked baseball team paved the way for a 3-1 victory over Post on Saturday afternoon. Max Watt struck out 10 batters in six innings and Thomas Kain and Matt Tietz combined to go 4-for-8 from the plate with a run batted in and three runs scored. The Fighting Knights move to 9-3 overall.
Watt (4-0) reached double-digits in strikeouts for the second time this year, giving him 39 K's in 26 innings pitched. The junior right-hander fanned at least two batters in three frames before giving way to Bill Mendek in the seventh. Lynn's All-American reliever struck out the side in the seventh to earn his second save of the season.
Singles by Kain and Tietz to start the fourth put runners in scoring position and Alex DeBellis put the first run on the board with a sacrifice fly, scoring Kain from third base. Lynn loaded the bases when Albert Lefran was hit by a pitch and Sam Sampen walked and tacked on the winning run following Eric Schindler getting hit by a pitch.
Tietz gave the Blue & White a 3-0 advantage in the fifth when he drove home Kain with a double into the left centerfield gap.
Post (2-3) put two runners in scoring position in the fifth following consecutive singles by Dylan Pastor and Drew Deangelis and scored one after a Lynn passed ball. But Brian McKenna struck out swinging to end the Eagles threat.
Matt Ackerman also logged two hits for the Blue & White, going 2-for-3 with a walk from the leadoff spot.
These two teams will duke it out again on Sunday, March 1, at 1 p.m. when the Fighting Knights host the Eagles at the Lynn Baseball Field. Fans can watch the game in full HD on LynnFightingKnights.com and receive in-game updates by following @Lynn_Knights on Twitter and Instagram.
