Lacrosse Suffers Overtime Loss to Coker at Home

BOCA RATON, Fla.- Lynn University's lacrosse team trailed by four goals at one point but rallied back to force overtime with Coker on Tuesday afternoon. The Fighting Knights fell 11-10 in their first ever sudden death period in program history, suffering their first home loss at Bobby Campbell Stadium this season, moving to 3-2 overall. Coker improves to 3-3 overall with the victory. Lynn's Anthony Rainone and Austin Jerhoff both had hat tricks in the loss and Rainone led all Knights with five points.

Brian Kiel scored at 7:18 in the first quarter to give the Fighting Knights their only lead of the game. Coker responded at 4:46 on a man-up goal to even the game 1-1. Sixteen seconds later Josh Wassum scored for the Cobras for a 2-1 lead that would hold until the end of the first period. Coker scored three straight goals in the second quarter to lead 5-1 before Jerhoff scored a one handed goal with under a minute to play for Lynn's second point of the game. Lynn trailed by three at halftime.

Rainone scored at 13:37 in the third quarter to cut Lynn's deficit to two and Jerhoff logged his second point on an assist from Johnny Gavin with 8:26 on the clock to make it a one-goal game, 5-4 in Coker's favor. The Cobras scored back-to-back penalty play goals to once again lead by three, 7-4, with 6:26 left in the period. Lynn went on a 3-0 run over the next two and a half minutes which including a couple of goals by Rainone and the game-tying goal by Gavin at 3:54. CC scored two goals two minutes apart to close out the quarter with a 9-7 advantage.

At 11:36 in the fourth Jerhoff had his third goal on a majestic pass from Rainone to make it a 9-8 game but Josh Smith answered Lynn's call with an unassisted goal to once again put the Cobras up by two. at 6:07 Mark Snellman scored unassisted and a minute later Gavin tied the game 10-all with 4:51 to play in regulation. Neither team was able to score in the final five minutes as the buzzer sounded and Lynn was headed to overtime for the first time in program history.

Vincent Genovesi won the opening faceoff of overtime giving Lynn possession and the opportunity to fire first. After a timeout called by head coach Brian Kingsbury to draw up a play the Fighting Knights were en route to attacking the Cobras' defense but a costly turnover by Kiel gave Coker the ball. After Coker called timeout Josh Smith took a shot at 3:01 that would find the back of the Lynn goal for a 11-10 victory in sudden death.

Lynn had a total of 11 penalties in the game serving nearly eight minutes of penalty time while Coker had just two penalties for a total of two minutes. Nick Nehring made 11 saves for the Blue & White in between the pipes. Caleb Cerf had a team-high seven groundballs while Genovesi went 13-for-16 at the faceoff spot. His counterpart Chris D'Angelo went 4-for-7 with four groundballs. Shaun McDonald caused a team-best four turnovers on the defensive end.

Coker's Tim Ryan also recorded 11 saves in goal while snagging a team-high 11 groundballs. Josh Smith led the team in points with four goals and an assist, including the game-winning goal.

Lynn was successful on all but two of their 19 clears in the game while edging the Cobras 37-25 in groundballs and shots, 45-31.

Lynn will hit the road for a two-game road trip to Atlanta where the Fighting Knights will take on North Greenville at 7 pm on Thursday, March 12 and Young Harris at 1 pm on Sunday, March 15.
